Parenthood is a beautiful time of life mixed in with a dose of sleep deprivation, a dash of impatience, a cup of craziness and a teaspoon of messiness. It has its ups and its downs; its joys and its sorrows.
If a person hasn’t learned how to multitask before becoming a parent, he or she very quickly will learn this technique in order to survive. Holding a baby on the hip while vacuuming? Easy peasy.
Reading to a wriggly toddler while entertaining a baby? No big deal. Fixing dinner while singing lullabies and rocking the bouncy chair with one foot? Got it covered.
One thing that can prove to be a challenge, however, is eating while nursing a baby. Infants don’t care if mom is hungry, needs the bathroom or is in the shower; when they’re hungry, they’re hungry and they’re hungry now.
Moms have shared stories from the trenches of parenthood where they’ve been noshing on a sandwich while nursing a baby only to look down and discover the contents of their sub sitting on top of baby’s head. Pepperonis have slid off pizzas while baby was nestled in mom’s arms.
Forks full of spaghetti have slithered off the utensil onto baby’s ‘lil noggin. Popsicles have fallen like tiny icebergs onto beautiful baby’s cheek.
Briar Lusia Mcqueen from New Zealand’s Mount Maunganui was finally brave enough to venture out alone with her eight-week-old son Jaxon. She was thrilled to leave the house and have baby in tow. She excitedly ordered breakfast and hot chocolate, admiring how adorable her little guy was.
But when her order arrived, Jaxon began crying. Putting herself last, Briar nestled Jaxon into his nursing position and began to feed him, leaving her own food sitting there getting cold.
That was fine with her, because her son came first. Suddenly, an older woman began to approach Briar. She instantly worried that the woman was going to complain about Briar nursing in public, especially at a restaurant.
Instead, the woman’s gesture stunned Briar.
“…she starts cutting up my breakfast for me and said, ‘What a good mama you are. We can’t have your food getting cold can we?'”
Briar was surprised and almost moved to tears with this stranger’s kindness.
“I honestly could have cried. Loveliest lady EVER!”
Briar shared her incident with the woman on Facebook where many other moms and even dads and grandpas chimed in about the importance of breastfeeding and helping out new mommas.
Robyn Murdoch said she knows what it’s like to be feeding a babe and have hot food quickly turn cold.
“I’m old fashioned in that sense that if I saw another mumma out grabbing a feed and was summoned to feed bub, I would offer a hand with her food, too.”
Tracy Owenby blamed society for making Briar and other moms nervous about breastfeeding in public.
“Our society has gotten so lost in what is right and what is wrong. Breastfeeding is right! Shunning someone for feeding their child in the most natural way is wrong. I am so glad this sweet lady helped you!”
Grandpa Peter Garret Martin commended Briar for nursing her baby, even in public.
“…it is the most natural thing to do when a bub is hungry. Enjoy the time together and lots of happiness.”
It takes just one simple act of kindness to brighten someone’s day. Briar was blessed by this older woman and we can see why. Kudos to the sweet elderly lady for stepping up and helping out the young mom!
