Can you remember the first time you learned how to swim?
This can be a huge milestone, especially for young kids who are afraid of the water.
It can easily be a stressful moment that will challenge the little kid and the parents.
However, swimming is important because it teaches kids how to survive in the water.
Lives are saved every day because of people who know how to swim, and this is an essential reason why parents should push their young sons and daughters to learn this skill.
Learning how to swim is definitely needed, but this does not make the lessons and overcoming the fear of water any easier for kids.
One swimming instructor knows a trick to teach his young students how to bravely face their fear.
Tyler Reed owns the Triton Aquatic Training in Tampa, Florida, and he knows a pretty effective trick in helping a kid fight the fear of water.
He calls it the “mermaid mantra,” and it includes saying these words out loud:
“I’m big. I’m brave. I’m beautiful.”
The swimming instructor knows how overwhelming it can be for little kids to dive into the water, not knowing what awaits them.
Understandably, kids are afraid, and he knows exactly how to make them feel better.
Tyler has helped many kids swim, and his “mermaid mantra” has worked every time.
These words, said out loud by the students, along with Tyler’s encouragement and support, give the kids a feeling of safety, and they learn how to trust their instructor.
Kids can be scared at first, but they eventually become brave enough to jump into the unknown first.
Seeing little boys and girls muster up the courage and finally overcome their fears is inspiring not only for the parents but also for Tyler.
It is always a significant accomplishment to gain a child’s trust and eventually make them learn to trust themselves.
“I think a lot of people look at 2-year-olds and babies as children that are incapable of being able to swim or save themselves and I’m trying to kind of erase that psyche from them, that they can they really can do this,” he shared in an interview with Good Morning America.
True enough, kids are capable of so many things, but they need to be affirmed through words and encouragement from the adults around them.
This way, they become braver and stronger, trusting themselves enough to try new things with a smile.
As for Tyler and his student, it is clear that the mantra is working.
In a separate video, it can be seen that the little girl now bravely swims in the water.
She even raises her hand in victory after her huge achievement!
