A parent-child relationship is one of the most sacred relationships in existence. The bond between parent and child is one like no other and can be instantly felt from birth. But, what if after giving birth, while still in the hospital, your baby was switched with another?

Would you be able to tell the difference?

Over 20 years ago, Pam and Laura were new mothers who had just given birth to two baby girls. The women ended up sharing the same recovery room, ultimately becoming fast friends.

One night, Pam went to the washroom while Laura remained in the hospital bed. A few moments later, a nurse arrived carrying a baby for Laura to breastfeed.

Laura explains to The Doctors, “I looked down and I said, ‘This doesn’t look like my baby.” This baby was sucking on my breast and another nurse comes in holding a baby, and I’m like “Oh my God, whose baby is sucking my boob?” And she goes, “Where did you get that baby?” So, I said, “Another nurse brought her to me.” And she said, “Oh my God.”

Pam eventually returned from the washroom, wondering what’s going on. She soon learned that Laura had been breastfeeding her daughter.

Pam explains to The Doctors, “I wasn’t shaken by Laura breastfeeding my daughter. I just wanted her back in my arms.”

The women remained friends throughout their lives, but they always wondered whether the nurses’ error had left them with the right daughters.

When Laura’s daughter Lindsey turned 24, Laura decided to tell her what had happened at the hospital, revealing that she may have been switched at birth. As a result, Lindsey reached out to Pam’s daughter Kirstie, asking Kirstie if she believed that a switch may have occurred.

Lindsey doesn’t look like any of her relatives, and wouldn’t be surprised if she was actually Pam’s daughter and not Laura’s. She explains:

“I didn’t question it until I had researched Kirstie when I was 23 years old. I saw a picture of her and her sister […] And all my friends were like, “Yeah, you should probably get that checked out.”

The 4 women write The Doctors asking for help and are given a DNA test to see whether Kirstie and Lindsey were switched at birth over 20 years ago.

Although it seems rare, babies are switched at birth more than you’d think. According to Oddee, 20,000 babies are switched at birth every year in the United States. Read about a few international cases here.

When Pam, Laura, Lindsey, and Kirstie hear the results of their DNA tests, they are shocked. Hear them in the video below!
