Have you ever woken up in the morning and immediately wanted to scream about one thing or another?
Well, this teacher is encouraging her students to do just that, but in these kids cases, it’s all about screaming out what makes them so awesome!
Anyunna Phillips, or Miss P. as her students know her, teaches kindergarten at Barack H. Obama Elementary Magnet School of Technology.
Miss P., who decided to become a teacher specifically so she could make a difference in young kids lives, starts everyday by asking her students to stand in front of a mirror and yell their affirmations at the tops of their tiny voices. She says doing it in front of the mirror is important, the kids have to look into their own reflections and say what they like about themselves.
“I want them to feel empowered and to know that they can do anything.” says the teacher.
Many of the affirmations that kids shout are things like, “I am strong!”, “I am smart!”, and “I can do anything!”. The affirmations don’t end with the morning ritual either, Anyunna reminds the kids of what they said throughout the day when she thinks they need a boost.
Doing affirmations isn’t just something Miss P. came up with on here own, there is lots of scientific data behind the idea of daily affirmations.

Stress reduction, positive academic achievements, and having a healthier mindset are just a few of the reasons that affirmations have become so popular. Affirmations can be based around anything you want them to be; from students saying things like “When I get a bad grade, I am motivated to do better.”, to people dealing with anxiety saying things like “My anxiety does not control my life. I do.”, there are even pregnancy affirmations such as “I trust my instincts and my body to tell me what I need when I am giving birth.”.
As a mother of 3 kids ranging in age from 1 to 7, Anyunna knows that the power of a positive mindset can make or break the day.
“I want my kids, and my students, to really learn how to be good people in this world…They know I believe in them and I’m just really trying to get them to believe in themselves as well.”. Miss P. has been teaching for 7 years and has most definitely left an impact on all the students she has come into contact with.
Affirmations utilize self-talk, and self-talk can either be a positive or a negative thing.
While it has been proven that positive self-talk can help you to achieve your goals and relieve stress, it can also be used to tear yourself down. Remember to always be mindful about how you talk to yourself and try to redirect any negativity into something positive.
Instead of “I can’t do this” or “I suck at this”, try “I am learning a new skill” and “I can’t wait to see how much I have improved since starting”.
Affirmations are an amazing way to start the day for anyone, kindergartener or retiree. Anyunna ‘Miss P.’ Phillips is certainly making an impact on these kids lives, and will surely continue to do so with all the future generations of students who are lucky enough to get her as their teacher.
