When your baby grows into a toddler it can be amazing to watch how different they become. Suddenly, the little peanut you had to do everything for has a sense of independence and wants to “do it themselves.” If you try and step in to help, sometimes it can lead to not-so-happy results!
Ryan Hunley from Indiana was very aware that his daughter, August, was an independent two-year-old.
One day, the family hopped into their vehicle to go out to eat. But before they took off August had to get her car seat buckled – and she was completely set on doing it herself.
This sounds like a pretty typical situation when it comes to two-year-olds. However, it’s what August had to say to her dad that made their video go viral!
Ryan was simply trying to help.
There’s nothing wrong with letting a toddler have all the time in the world to complete a task. That is unless you’ve got places to go! In the clip, the dad offers to lend August a hand with buckling her straps. Wrong move, Dad.
She tells him:
“Worry about yourself!”
Lol, did she really just say that?
The girl then points to her dad and says again, “Worry about yourself!” Apparently, Ryan needs to stop getting into other people’s business (like when they’re trying to buckle their car seat) and focus on himself instead. Okay, check!
She’s got a super-sweet side too.
August may be independent, but it doesn’t mean she’s nothing but spice. To make her dad feel better she cutely tells him, “You can help when we’re out to eat, okay?”
Naturally, August learned the phrase at home.
“Worry about yourself” is something Ryan and his wife would say to their other daughter (who was even more headstrong) to stop her from “correcting” others. Little did they know, their youngest would soak it in and flip it on dad!
Ryan told ABCNews.com:
“She knows what she wants, how she wants it and when she wants it. They’re both like that. But polite though. It’s not malicious or mean, they’re just independent women. They’re their mama, for sure.”
We get to see for ourselves that she’s a polite little lady.
Since August seems to be struggling with the buckle, Dad asks her again if she needs help (frankly, everyone’s probably pretty hungry too). She responds,
“No thank you. No thank you!”
Dad kinda asks for it…
Instead of just letting August work on her car seat in silence, Ryan decides to come back with a question. He asks her, “What do you want me to do?”
Isn’t it obvious, Dad? She reminds him, “Worry about yourself. Worry about yourself.” Ryan should have just done this…
Toddlers can make us laugh with the things they say. Understandably, Ryan can’t help but chuckle during the situation.
When August realizes that the car’s still not moving (meaning Dad’s still not focusing on what he’s supposed to be doing), she gets a tad bit frustrated.
She pulls out the old pointer finger again and commands:
“You drive! Worry about yourself! Go drive!”
A toddler being stubborn is nothing new. A lot of times if you try to help one who’s set on completing a task, you might hear a response like, “No, I do it!” But in this case – the girl was perhaps trying to teach her dad a lesson as well.
