Little kids don’t usually hold back when it comes to their feelings. You can spot a pouty toddler from a mile away, or an ecstatic kid that just discovered 20-bucks in a Christmas card. They can be over-the-top that’s for sure, which is only one of the many reasons why we love them!
With that being said, can you imagine how a child would react if they woke up and found a big pile of presents, just for them? A lot of kids would probably jump up and down before trying to tear into them. But one boy from Scotland actually surprised his mom with how he responded in this scenario.
Finlay Strafford was turning three-years-old, so his family decided to buy him a bunch of gifts to help celebrate his special day. They wrapped the toys and stacked them up in the living room.
On the morning of Finlay’s birthday, he comes down the stairs wearing his pajamas and carrying his blankie. He rushes into the living room only to be met with his family’s huge surprise.
Right away the boy’s face brightens up at the glorious sight. He seems extremely thrilled seeing all of the presents, which of course, isn’t the surprising part.
With the most adorable voice, Finlay tells his mom:
“Mom, I can’t even believe it … No way.”
He shakes his head in disbelief looking at the pile – which contains a scooter, helmet, and lots of other colorfully wrapped packages. I don’t know about you, but even at my age, I probably would’ve done a few loops around the house out of excitement.
Mom then notices something about Finlay that you wouldn’t normally expect from a three-year-old who was about to open up a bunch of toys.
He tells mom:
“No, there’s no way there’s lots and lots of presents.”
But as he speaks, there’s also a glimmer in his eyes. They’re full of happy tears! Mom asks the toddler if he’s crying, and he quickly wipes his eyes with his hand and apologizes.
It’s an aww-worthy moment that makes you want to grab the box of tissues for yourself!
A tiny kid being brought to tears over gifts might not be something you see every day. However, happy tears certainly are a common thing.
But why exactly do we cry when we’re feeling so good? Psychologist, Oriana R. Aragón, was interviewed by Fatherly about the topic and provided a reason. According to Aragón, crying makes happy moments more intensified.
The Fatherly website explains:
“Our tears release neurotransmitters known as leucine enkephalin, which can act as a natural painkiller. When people cry because they’re sad, this makes them feel better. But when people cry because they’re happy, that same neurotransmitter makes them feel that much happier. In other words, tears encourage catharsis.”
After Finlay dries his face he gets a big kiss from mom, who seems just as moved by her son’s response.
Near the end of the video, the birthday boy has just one more question for her. He finally asks, “Can we open them?” to which she responds, “Of course you can!”
It’s a video clip that’s left the internet’s heart melted in a puddle. Some have responded online about how sweet and polite Finlay is.
A man named Taeef wrote:
“He has a commendable sense of gratitude. He’s going to be a super awesome man when he grows up. I’m sure his parents are as much awesome as this little gentleman.”
