It’s fair to say that a new sibling can be a bit of a shock for your current children, especially if they’re used to being an only child.
The best thing to do is get your child familiar with the baby when they’re still in your tummy. This gives them nine months to get used to the idea of having another sibling.
Trust us when we say that this is a surprise that most children would rather know about in advance.
When your bump becomes obvious, you could spend some time encouraging your current children to talk to their new sibling before he or she is born. This will help to create the initial stages of a bond- and it’s also totally adorable to watch your child talking to your bump!
YouTube channel Just Jordynn Around has proof of just how heartwarming it can be to watch your child speak to their younger sibling.
One of their latest videos is titled, “Jordy feeling baby kick,” and shows Jordynn sitting next to her mommy with her hand on the baby bump.
“Baby is moving a lot in my belly now but his movements are getting more and more painful because he’s getting bigger but running out of space in there. 34 weeks and counting … we can’t wait for you to come out so that we can finally meet you baby!” Jordynn’s mom said in the caption.
Little Jordynn is only two-and-a-half years old, but she already seems to be pretty emotionally intelligent for her age.
As the baby kicks, she takes her hand away in surprise and says, “I see him, very hard!” To which mom responds, “He’s hurting mommy now.”
Jordynn considers this, then she turns to the bump and demands, “Baby, say sorry to mommy!”
Naturally, there’s a silence that follows this, in which Jordynn sits staring at the bump as if waiting for an answer. She really thinks that she’s going to get a reply!
Poor Jordynn seems disappointed that the baby hasn’t replied, and worried that mommy could be getting hurt.
Jordynn has clearly been taught that you’re not supposed to hurt anybody, so in her mind, if the baby is hurting mommy, then he must be doing it on purpose!
It’s up to mom to reassure her.
“It’s okay, he doesn’t know that he’s hurting me,” Jordynn’s mom says.
We can already tell that Jordynn is going to be a great older sister, and with mom’s due date just around the corner, we won’t have long to find out!
Jordynn’s mom often shares sweet videos of the toddler onto her YouTube account, so we can’t wait to see what’s in store for us when the baby is here.
We’re hoping that we get a ‘baby meets older sibling for the first time’ video, as those are always so precious!
In the meantime, we wish Jordynn’s mom the best of luck for her final few weeks of pregnancy- we’re sure that Jordynn will make sure that the baby doesn’t kick too hard!
