When nurse Jess Hamm saw baby Delilah in the pediatric intensive care unit she knew that their lives would be intertwined from that day forth. But she probably had no idea that she would become a mother to twins.
When Hamm first laid eye on 14-month-old Delilah she was being treated for non-accidental trauma at Wolfson Children’s Hospital.
The baby was extremely underfed, had several broken bones, and a fractured skull. She was so weak she couldn’t even hold her own head up.
“My heart was broken. I don’t want to cry. She was just so lifeless, but she still held onto my finger,” Hamm told Fox News. “I was like ‘oh my gosh, I’m going to take her home.”
Hamm inquired about Deliah’s adoption and reached out to the Florida Department of Children and Families and found out that Delilah had a twin sister who was also being treated at the hospital.
Hamm wasn’t about to leave Delilah’s sister Caroline behind.
“They’ve been through so much. They’re completely different kids. If you had met them when I met them you’d be amazed,” Hamm said.
Hamm didn’t think twice about adopting Caroline right along with Delilah and eventually brought the two girls home. Now the worst is behind these girls. They live in a safe healthy home with a mom who loves them very much.
They are getting all the things they need to grow up happy and healthy. They are hitting all of their developmental goals and have developed their own unique personalities.
Hamm says that Caroline is the social butterfly of the family.
She enjoys helped others and is protective of her sister. As for Delilah, she is quite the charmer and loves giving kisses and showing people love. Once she finds something she likes, she can entertain herself for quite a long time.
Hamm always wanted to be a mother but she never really considered adoption until the choice was right in front of her.
She says she decided to share her story in the hopes that people will open up their hearts and homes to other children.
“I hope when people hear my story it opens them up to the possibilities of adopting,” Hamm said.
