While the NY subway system is not known for being the friendliest of places, sometimes beautiful moments are captured that prove that even in New York, humanity and kindness can shine through.
Twitter user and actress Rachel MacKnight tweeted a photo on July 2 she had taken while on the C-train with the caption: “Thiiiiiis is what makes America great “Happy 4th of July, y’all.”
The picture showcased a young girl of undetermined race smiling at a Caucasian baby. While the touching photo is simple, it was a touching way to show what America looks like in the modern day.
The video quickly went viral, and people were excited to see this photo in time for July 4th. The photo currently sits at 18,064 Retweets and 70,633 Likes, which is truly incredible for this touching moment and for how open America has become, even as we fight difficult challenges politically, economically, societally, and more.

The outpouring of support has proven that despite all of the divisive political action that has been happening lately, America is a truly beautiful place that has many faces and come in many different colors, shapes, and sizes. We love the diversity that makes this country so great, and while we can often feel afraid in the face of change, people are all united by kindness, humanity, and hospitality at the end of the day, not by fear, anger, and segregation. We hope that as we face these many challenges head on, the next generation can be inspired by little moments like this one, which prove that we can go beyond what we look like and embrace our similarities more than our differences!
