Indianapolis resident Kristin Schoonveld never anticipated the extraordinary chain of events that would unfold after she made a selfless decision.

That was to help a couple struggling with infertility by donating her eggs.

Inspired by an article on egg donation in 1994, Schoonveld, who herself was adopted as a baby in 1969, felt compelled to give others the chance to experience the joys of parenthood.

Fast forward 25 years later, in 2019, Schoonveld decided to delve deeper into her own genetic background and submitted her DNA to 23andMe, a company known for its DNA testing and ancestry breakdown services.

To her astonishment, the results revealed a match indicating that she had a biological son.

Initially dismissing it as a possible mistake, since she had never been pregnant, Schoonveld’s curiosity led her to explore the profile further.

To her amazement, she noticed a striking resemblance between herself and the young man portrayed in the profile.

As she delved deeper, Schoonveld discovered that her “son” had been conceived through in vitro fertilization and was also searching for his biological family.

Interestingly, this heartwarming tale intertwines with another beautiful bond Schoonveld formed back in 2012.

At the Special Olympics held that June, she met a remarkable young man with Down syndrome named Nick.

Schoonveld’s connection with Nick grew stronger each day, and she even took a break from her own life to work in a special education classroom where Nick was a nine-year-old student.

Tragically, Nick’s mother, Grace, passed away in 2015 at the age of 60 after being diagnosed with non-smoker lung cancer.

Fate moves in mysterious ways.

However, Schoonveld and Nick’s father found solace in each other and eventually fell in love.

They decided to tie the knot, and just three months after, Schoonveld legally adopted Nick and became his official parent.

Motivated by the sense of belongingness that her relationship with Nick brought, Schoonveld embarked on a quest to find her biological parents.

However, her search took an unexpected turn when she discovered her biological son, Parker Erickson, aged 26, instead.

Schoonveld and Erickson began communicating, and in November 2019, she and Nick traveled to Indiana to meet Erickson and his parents in person.

This emotional moment not only brought Erickson face to face with his biological mother but also united him with Nick, giving him the brother he had longed for.

A new beginning for everyone.

They will surely create beautiful memories together and nothing and nobody is going to stop them from doing that.

After all, that’s over two decades to fill, it’s going to be an exciting journey for them all, no doubt.
