Step-parents can get a bad rap. And that can go double for stepmoms.
We’ve all heard about the “wicked stepmother” trope.
“Creating a blended family and attempting to be a resource and a role model for a child who is not your own is a tough situation for anyone, but it can often be even tougher for women,” Miller Law Group explains.
“The role can be thankless and demoralizing and the already-difficult job isn’t helped in the slightest by societal expectations that stepmothers will overstep boundaries, play favorites, and generally act in unacceptable ways.”
Psychology Today says that some reasons stepmoms can have more difficulty are because of the expectations their partner has for creating order in a blended house, which can set them up for clashes with their stepkids.
“In addition, women, in general, tend to feel more stressed and depressed when there is tension in the home. Women also tend to feel more worried and guilty and tend to be more involved in the lives of the people around them. Also, her stepchildren may feel guilty towards their biological mother for allowing the stepmother to parent them, and so they may resist her well-intentioned efforts.”
But that’s not always the case. There are plenty of families with rock star stepparents who love their stepchildren unconditionally and with the same force that they would love their own children with.
Nicholas’ mom is one of those kinds of stepparents.
He and his sibling loved their stepmom so much that they wanted her to officially become their mom. So, they surprised her with adoption papers.
First, they handed her a large beautifully wrapped box that looked like a present.
“This is from me and Nick,” someone said off-camera as mom unwrapped the gift.
Mom asked a few questions and her stepkids gave some strange answers which made her become a bit suspicious.
Finally, the wrapping paper was off and Mom got to tear into her gift.
“Even colored tissued paper!” Mom comments when she opens the box.
“What do you think it is, Mama?” asked one of her kids.
“I don’t know but now I know that Dad knows,” she said looking suspicious. “And Abby knows, and you know. So, if everyone knows, I don’t know. Hmm.”
Mom then pulled out a manilla folder. She read for a few seconds then hid behind it to shed some tears.
“Do you know what it is,” asked a sibling.
Mom couldn’t answer because she was crying.
That’s when her two stepchildren walked over to give her a hug. They told her they had been planning it for a few years.
“But we finally did it,” she said.
“I can’t talk,” this sweet mom said as she cried happy tears. “You don’t know how much I love this.”
“Happy birthday!” the kids said. “Oh my God! I love it.”
