When Kacie Wadley of Blanchard, Oklahoma, met her boyfriend Johnathan in 2013, she knew it was love at first sight.
Johnathan was everything Kacie wanted in a man, but she also knew dating him was a package deal. You see, Johnathan was the father of two girls who had only met their birth mother sporadically throughout their lives. The girls and their father lived estranged from his ex, and Kacie knew that if things got serious with Johnathan, it would mean playing a big role in their lives.
Johnathan’s oldest daughter Briley was 7 years old when the couple started dating, and she began calling Kacie ‘mom’ right away.
At first, Kacie was understandably a little uncomfortable with Briley’s attachment. If things didn’t work out with Johnathan, she didn’t want his daughters to get hurt, as well. But, as the couple’s relationship progressed smoothly, Kacie soon began to reciprocate the little girl’s deep affections.
Kacie and Johnathan dated for the next five years, going on to have two children of their own.
When they started discussing plans for marriage, Kacie devised a heartwarming plan
Kacie knew that officially joining the family would be a big decision for everyone— and to really cement the deal, she had a proposal for the teenage Briley.
In a video that was posted to the Caters Clips YouTube channel today (July 24), we get to see the emotional moment when Kacie asks Briley if she would be her “real” daughter— in essence, offering to legally adopt the little girl.
Johnathan is the cameraman, filming the event. He struggles with the camera for a few seconds, before turning it towards the living room, where you see Briley sitting on the couch. Kacie approaches the young girl, with her hands on her hips, a serious tone in her voice. “So you know today is a big day,” she tells Briley. “Things did not go as expected, so some things around here are going to have to be a little different.”
“I want you to stand up,” Kacie says. “I want to tell you something,” she continues, grasping onto the Briley’s hands.
When the two come together, Kacie drops down to one knee.
The teen must have a slight idea of what is about to happen because she immediately starts to sob. “Briley Davis,” Kacie tells her.
“You have been like a daughter to me from the day that I met you. And I want you to be not like a daughter anymore.”
“Will you be my real daughter?” Kacie asks her, slipping a ring onto Briley’s finger.
Briley weeps uncontrollably as Kacie stands and wraps her in a giant hug.
It’s an emotional moment for everyone, and the two women stay clasped for a few seconds as they continue to cry. “I love you so much,” Kacie tells Briley, patting the young girl’s back.
Kacie asks Briley if there’s anything she wants to say before Johnathan turns of the camera. The young teenager, overwhelmed by emotions, manages to squeeze out a giant ‘thank you’ between her flowing tears.
There’s been more and more “adoption surprise” videos coming out as of late, but there’s something about Briley’s unadulterated joy that makes this one especially poignant.
