Raising a child alone might be the hardest thing anyone will ever do.
The reality is that single parents seldom choose to be what they are.
Sometimes, the circumstances just leave them no choice.
It’s those people who push their love and patience to the limit.
Raising kids as a couple is hard enough.
You deserve a ton of credit for doing it solo, which is why we’re featuring Sommer Jean, a former single parent.
Sommer Jean of Florida was a single mom to 11-year-old Mekhi for much of his life.
She was in college when she had Mekhi, and you can guess that raising him took a lot of effort and sacrifice.
Sommer was in an abusive relationship during most of Mekhi’s early years.
On many days, it was only Mekhi who ate anything because Sommer couldn’t afford food for both of them.
She said, “It was either he ate, or I ate – and he ate every time.”
The mother and son have faced challenge after challenge and made it through each one stronger than before.
Mekhi’s love for his mom goes beyond words.
Mekhi did everything a little boy could do to make his momma happy.
Whether it was chores or just emotional support, he was there to give it.
Mekhi is a pretty well-spoken and mature kid for someone who’s just 11.
Tough circumstances create kids that mature quickly.
Though it makes you wonder if it’s worth giving up being a normal kid.
And remember t the abusive relationship? That one really affected Mekhi.
That’s a lot for an 11-year-old to grow up around.
But Mekhi is a great kid and never lets it get his spirits down.
He always wondered what it’d be like to have a full set of parents.
Having just one parent might affect you when all your peers have two.
But Mekhi didn’t have to wait much longer to have a full family.
Meet Jeff, a man who Sommer had been seeing for a while.
He was a kind, outgoing, and respectable man – the type that Sommer had been looking for.
Sommer was very protective of Mekhi given her history of dating.
Mekhi might be a mature kid, but he’s still just a kid.
Jeff, who’d been dating Sommer for a while, came to their home to meet Mekhi.
They got along incredibly well.
Jeff’s confident, outgoing personality was the right match for a timid kid like Mekhi.
Mekhi slowly learned confidence from Jeff. He described it as “coming out of his shell.” If a man can do something that good for your kid, then he’s probably the right man.
However, Jeff was the right guy.
He proposed to Jean, and the two started planning their wedding.
And you need to see Mekhi’s reaction to seeing his mom in a wedding dress.
You might cry as much as he did.
When Mekhi saw his beloved momma in that white dress, it was all tears in his eyes.
Happy tears, though. He embraced his momma and told her how happy he was for her.
This was a big chapter in their life, and they couldn’t wait to see what the next chapters with Jeff would be like.
I don’t blame Mekhi for crying.
“You might not have one parent forever and if you think your family is different, that’s okay. It’s okay to have a different family. You don’t have to be like everybody else.” said Mekhi to all the kids of single parents who may be listening
But you sure can’t say no when the opportunity to have a full family comes along, right?
