What would you do if your child was born halfway through the pregnancy and fighting for their lives in the NICU?

Would you give up or power through?

Shana Alexander, her husband, and their children did not give up.

“You just think about getting through the next day, the next day, the next day,” Shana said.

It was a hard battle but they were ready to fight the fight. It’s especially inspiring since their youngest child didn’t give up either.

They named him Abel.

“I woke up intubated. I didn’t know if the baby made it. I didn’t know if it was a boy or girl,” Shana recalled.

Abel was born on October 28, 2021 at only 1 pound and eight ounces. They thought his chances of survival were very weak.

“They wanted to do comfort care twice the first three weeks he was born. My kids were able to come in the second week to say bye,” Shana added.

And do you know what happened?

Abel kept pushing. He wanted to live.

And so, for the next seven months, 203 days to be exact, Abel fought for his life. And the medical team at Beth Israel and Children’s Hospital helped him fight.

Shana and her family fought him as well but it was very difficult.

“You sit in a room for a long time watching other families – I’ve watched more than 50 babies leave during my stay. We’ve had more than 19 roommates. You pray to God I hope that’s going to be me one day,” Shana shared.

Holding on to that hope was so difficult. That’s why they had to hold on to Someone much stronger.

Shana and her husband held on to their faith. They held on to the faith that God was taking care of their little Abel.

“It’s brought me so much closer to God. My eyes are opened. I’m very thankful for so much more things. I could have died too that day,” Shana said.

As they held on to their faith, Shana and her husband grew closer to God.

And after almost seven months, God answered their prayers.

Little Abel was finally strong enough medically and his doctors discharged him. He was finally going home to his family!

His three siblings couldn’t wait to see him again.

“God can do miracles. Some people might think it’s insane, but it’s really true,” Shana said.

Even the people who watched this news story were so ecstatic as well!

The Alexander family is ecstatic to finally experience living their family life with Abel.

“Finally, being able to experience our son at home with our family, our kids, I feel like we can all thrive now,” Shana told CBS Boston. “The mom guilt was so real. It’s been a long time coming and I feel like I can finally take a breath and enjoy our son.”
