There are a lot of babies born into the world each day. In fact, roughly 385,000 babies are born every 24 hours, which comes out to about 140 million per year. Out of all of those babies, 15 million are born premature, born into the world too early for one reason or another.
That was the case with one baby born at the University Hospital in Brno, Czech Republic. Due to the circumstances of her birth, the baby was considered something of a miracle baby.
A pregnant mom declared brain dead
Weighing just four pounds and 11 ounces when she was born, the baby girl was tiny. The reason for her early birth was a tragic one, her mother had been declared brain dead after suffering from a hemorrhage.
The mom was kept alive for 117 days
The mother had suffered from a stroke at 27-years old and so was unconscious when she arrived at the hospital. She had been kept alive for 117 days until the doctors thought it was safe enough for the baby to be delivered.
Fortunately, the mother’s baby was healthy
After checking the baby out, it was discovered that the stroke had not affected her health-wise, and the baby was allowed to continue to develop in the brain-dead mother’s womb.
Doctors and family made sure the baby was as healthy as she could be
The doctors even thought ahead enough to stimulate walking by having a therapist move the mother’s legs. This helped to ensure that the baby inside of her would continue to grow healthily while she was on artificial life support.
The doctors at the hospital; also checked to see how the baby was developing using ultrasound. Unfortunately, the staff felt that they couldn’t allow the baby to stay in her mother for the full term and plans were made for her early birth.
The baby girl was delivered via Caesarean section
At 34 weeks, the baby girl was delivered via Caesarean section. Once the baby had been delivered, her mother was taken off of life support. She passed away surrounded by family members, including her husband, and hospital staff.
“This has really been an extraordinary case when the whole family stood together… without their support and their interest it would never have finished this way,” Pavel Ventruba, head of obstetrics and gynecology, told Reuters.
Sadly, the baby girl would grow up without knowing her birth mother. Fortunately, she has other family members to care for her, such as her aunt, who has a baby of her own and is breastfeeding her.
