Growing up in a world that tends to focus on what differences people have from each other rather than the similarities they share, it is important to take a step back and see the whole picture.

In the eyes of children, things are much simpler, and the way they perceive the world and others has nothing to do with what we, adults, see.

Children have an innocent heart, and they can’t think of anything that keeps them apart other than what they prefer to play with or what their favorite food is.

Indeed, children are very observant, and, as such, they can see and focus on what brings people together rather than the opposite.

For Jia and Zuri of Miami, it was easy to conclude, as preschoolers, that they were twins.

As their mothers explained in an interview with CBS Sunday Morning at the time, they had come up with numerous reasons why they were actual twins.

First of all, they’re the same age, and they were born on almost the same day. I mean, isn’t this enough proof?

Also, the girls were the same height at the time, which was an addition to their list of reasons why they were twins.

The preschoolers used to insist on wearing the same outfits, and they just wanted to do everything together.

Of course, this doesn’t mean that they didn’t argue sometimes, as all kids do.

“I can tell you these two Gemini’s love and argue like actual sisters because they are so much more alike than they are different,” Jia’s mom, Ashley Sarnicola, has shared in an Instagram post.

But, as much as Ashley and Valencia love to see their daughters actually believe they are twins, they can’t help feeling sad about what is about to happen once they’re old enough to understand they don’t share the same skin color.

Valencia Copeland admitted that she had a fear.

There was always the possibility that others might poison their friendship with their stupid mentality of discriminating against people based on their skin color.

“You know, you’re happy for a few seconds, and then you become sad because they have to grow up, and then society takes over,” Valencia said during the same interview.

Indeed, from a very young age the girls, who genuinely believed they were more than just friends or even sisters, faced the negative side of this world.

They were at a party once, and an older child told them they could not be twins because they had different skin colors.

The little girls were shuttered by this claim- Jia even started crying.

But, only seconds later, she found the best answer to this child’s statement.

She said they were twins because they shared the same soul.

Now, let’s just take a second and let these words sink in.

How true is that, though?

It’s not skin color, country of origin, or religion that brings people together, but the goodness in their hearts. And this is something these girls still share.
