A little boy’s childhood should be filled with imagination, adventure, and wonder. It’s a beautiful thing to witness a wide-eyed little kid going through their life, asking questions all the while. For Ronnie Oneal, his life was full of the wrong kind of wonder, but it was wondering if he was going to live to see the next day.

It was a terrible, terrible, event and it almost became even worse. In March 2018, when his father turned on his own family, Ronnie was the only one to survive. His mother and 9-year-old sister passed and Ronnie was left with critical injuries.

He was repeatedly stabbed and burned and needed immediate medivac.

When the call went out, the medics already assumed he wasn’t going to make it from the extent of his injuries. While he was at the hospital, however, he miraculously made it through the first few hours. The critical time had finally passed and he was likely going to make it.

Corporal Mike Blair was one of the officers to respond to the scene and was with him at the hospital.

Weeks later, Mike visited Ronnie at the hospital. While he was there, Ronnie turned to look at the officer and asked if he was able to stay and watch a movie with him. As you could imagine, Corporal Mike’s heart broke and he promised that he would head back that evening after work to watch a movie with him.

Mike called his wife and they decided to go with Ronnie instead of their pre-planned date night.

As soon as Mike’s wife met Ronnie, she knew she was open to adopting him. With their minds made up, they started the process. Although they had all the intention in the world of adopting Ronnie, it would still take a whole 5-months more until their family of 7 would add a new member.

Finally, they got a call.

They were able to adopt Ronnie in 2019 and he couldn’t be more thankful. He loves his “new” mom and dad, as well as his siblings. When he thinks back to his life before the Blair’s adoption, he has good memories from that, too. He has memories of his mom making him food and pushing him on the swing.

Ronnie knows that he has a story but he also knows he has a future.

He’s a science lover, playing with his brother, and wants to grow up and be an actor! His parents look at him and know that with what he’s been through, anything is possible. The mantra that Mike has given Ronnie is this:

“I am safe, I am loved, and I am part of this family.”

With that level of care, Ronnie is sure to grow up into a man who understands the love of a parent in a way that he never would have before. It’s often the toughest stories that create the most incredible people.
