One of the hardest parts for these kids is doing things without their deployed parents around.
Be it a softball game, graduation, or a school concert, they often look into the crowd, hoping to see their mom or dad, but they’re not there.
Even live-streamed events can’t replace the physical presence of their parents.
Thanks to the internet, we’ve all seen those tear-jerking videos of children reuniting with their parents returning from overseas.
These moments are incredibly moving, especially considering that some of these kids haven’t hugged their mom or dad in years.
While kids certainly miss their dads, there’s something different about a mom being deployed.
She’s often the one cooking meals, reading bedtime stories, and healing wounds. So, when mom’s away, it hits a little differently.
One young girl, incredibly proud of her mother’s military service, found it hard to cope with her absence.
They kept in touch online, but nothing could replace seeing her mom in person. It had been a long 14 months.
At a school concert, the camera focuses on this girl, singing her heart out in the choir.
She’s doing her best, despite missing her mom. The performance is beautiful, lasting over three minutes.
After the concert, a woman, possibly the principal or a music teacher, steps up.
She talks about her family tradition of having everyone together for the holidays, emphasizing the importance of being with loved ones.
The woman then announces a special reunion for a family separated for a year.
The camera zooms in on the girl, who’s unaware that this announcement is about her.
But when Africa is mentioned, her eyes light up with realization.
The girl is called to the stage, and she instantly knows. She runs into her mother’s arms, and they embrace tightly, tears flowing.
Her mother whispers, “Are you happy?” and after her daughter nods, she replies, “So am I.”
During these challenging times, it’s crucial to support children of deployed parents and understand their struggles.
