“A mother’s love knows no bounds.”
That’s how the reporter on Today.com began telling this story.
A woman in Maryland is hailed as the ultimate example of that devotion.
A selfless mother-to-be
9 months pregnant and involved in a car accident, she ignored her own needs and rushed to the side of the crash victim.
Then she gave birth to a beautiful baby less than 24 hours after.
Megan Warfield and her mother were driving home from her late father’s annual memorial golf tournament in Baltimore County when they ended up in a multi-vehicle crash.
It wasn’t pretty.
A car in front of them flipped over, trapping the driver inside.
That’s when Megan, 9 months pregnant but also a firefighter by trade, jumped into action without hesitation.
Holding onto the injured woman and keeping her calm, Megan waited by her side until more help arrived.
When Shannon Stallings, Chief Fire Officer, arrived at the scene, his first impression was, “You’re on Maternity Leave! You should not be here.”
Then, her own labor pains began.
She was rushed to Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore.
Hours later, Baby Charlotte was welcomed to the World.
She was healthy and has a hero as a mom.
Shannon added, “When she wants to excel and she wants to do good for others, she steps right up and does it. And this was a prime example of something like that.”
Megan was interviewed live.
She recalled that their car was hit a couple of different times.
When everything calmed down and settled, she checked with her mom if she was okay and she was.
She started helping with the traffic at first, then saw the car overturned with a person trapped inside.
She went over and started to crawl, then she realized she was pregnant and could not do it.
911 was then called.
She just held the trapped person in place and waited for additional help, since she did not know the extent of her injuries or how stuck she was.
When the adrenaline dissipated, Megan started to shake and experienced abdominal pains.
Her boyfriend Josh, a paramedic, was also one of the volunteers who responded to the accident.
When he arrived, someone mentioned that Megan was also on the scene.
He went to her and said that they need to visit the hospital and check her properly.
23 Hours later came Baby Charlotte.
She was a little early since Megan should have been due a week after the accident.
When Megan was asked if she would tell the story to Charlotte, she said, “She probably won’t believe it,” and smiled.
Ellie and Jameson, Megan’s older kids, were asked if they liked their little sister.
Ellie responded with a “Yes!” and Jameson nodded.
Since she gave birth, Megan is currently on administrative duty helping with the Fire and Rescue Academy.
This helps her to relax.
