We’re not sure why “gender reveals” became such a big thing, we just know many of them have been disasters. And when you involve explosives (which people seem to inexplicably love), there’s a good chance things aren’t going to end well.
And to be fair, gender is the social construct, so it’s really a sex reveal, but that doesn’t have quite the same ring to it.
Is it worth it?
Many expectant parents are excited to share milestones with their friends and family, but the gender reveal has taken on a whole new status to some couples. They seem to want to go big or go home.
A couple revealed they were expecting a boy with an explosion that ended up starting a wildfire that burned 47,000-acres in Arizona, causing millions of dollars worth of damage.
A woman lost her life at a gender reveal party when a device meant to send up pink or blue smoke sent shrapnel flying as well. The woman was standing about 45 feet away from the device, according to KCCI.
And just this year, a Michigan father-to-be was killed when “a small cannon device” that was being used for a gender reveal at a baby shower exploded, according to The Cut.
These are just a few of the many examples of happy occasions gone wrong.
The right kind of viral reveal
It used to be that you could just bake a cake and cut into it to reveal blue or pink, but in the age of social media, things have gotten out of hand. But that’s why it was so refreshing to see Charlette and Dan Fontaine’s viral gender reveal.
The Manitoba, Canada couple is getting attention for all the right reasons.
In their Tik Tok video, the Fontaines stand with a black balloon as standing with a big balloon as Charlette says, “I wonder what it is?”
We do too! A balloon seems like a nice, low-key way to do this.
The twist
The couple’s video might be the first viral gender reveal in which the child itself delivers the news.
Without setting off any devices, we find out it’s a girl. But there’s a twist. The couple’s daughter Bianca runs in and pops the balloon full of pink confetti announcing “It’s a 12-year-old girl!”
Wait, what?
The Fontaines had always wanted a baby and went through all of the appropriate training to adopt. But when Charlette found out that children over the age of 2 were often labeled as “unadoptable,” she was heartbroken. That’s when the couple decided that whatever child came into their lives was meant to be.
The couple told Buzzfeed News that in 2017, they threw a coin into Niagra Falls and pledged: “If there’s a kid that needs us, we’ll get a call.” Not long after that, they were contacted about Bianca, who was 8-years-old at the time.
The rest is history
Now 12 years old, Bianca has been formally adopted by the Fontaine’s, hence the reveal video. (And it’s pretty clear that they love Harry Potter as well considering the theme.)
And it’s such a sweet and wholesome moment that it has now been viewed by millions, with many saying it’s the only kind of reveal video they ever want to see.
