Barbara Millicent Roberts, or Barbie, as she’s more popularly known, has been a staple in the fashion doll market for more than 50 years. Being developed by Ruth Handler, an American businesswoman, Barbie is an icon for little girls around the world, with over one billion dolls having been sold.
With an endless list of careers, hobbies, and accessories, you can do nearly anything you’d like with your new, plastic pal. A few years ago, however, one little girl found a new purpose for Barbie— completely cracking the internet up in the process.
Sophia Nagorski’s dad had just caught her using nail polish to paint a Barbie doll in her room.
The activity was off-limits to the three-year-old, a rule she was well aware of. Now, unfortunately, her father Joseph had busted her, and she had some explaining to do. Sitting cross-legged in their Cleveland home, a teary Sophia defends her actions, coming up with the most amazing excuse. Thankfully, Joseph caught it all on camera.
“Ok, so Sophia, you painted your Barbie with nail polish? That’s right?” he asks her.
While Sophia doesn’t disagree, she feels there’s additional information that should be known— this is all Barbie’s fault.
“Yes,” Sophia admits. “She told me to!”
As you can imagine, Joseph isn’t quite convinced: “So, when Barbie was laying there, Barbie said, ‘I’m going to go ahead and just lay here and you can play with me,’ and then all of a sudden, Barbie said, ‘Can you paint me with nail polish?”‘
“She said it a hundred times!” the teary toddler squeals. “And I’d be saying no!”
But according to Sophia, Barbie wouldn’t take no for an answer. The little girl had no choice but to misbehave under the duress of the manipulative doll. This is all Barbie’s fault—that’s Sophia’s story and she’s sticking to it.
Joseph explains to his daughter that she could have ruined the carpets and blankets, and while she admits it was a terrible idea, that darned Barbie just wouldn’t leave her alone. Dad could have chastised his daughter for fibbing, but instead, he goes along with her story.
“Well,” should you get in trouble or should your Barbies get in trouble?” Joseph asks her.
Staying loyal to her plastic companion, Sophia admits that she’s the one who should be punished— and the next time the pesky Barbie tries to convince her to do something, Sophia will definitely say no.
Since being uploaded, Sophia’s hilarious defense has been viewed hundreds of thousands of times.
“Something coming out of a simple video is just mind-blowing to me, “Joseph later told ABC News.
“I just think that overall, my daughter is one of the best things that’s happened to me in my life. Without her, the day would be boring. She’s got this diva mentality. She’s whatever you see in the video multiplied by 10 and it’s something I’m very, very lucky to see every day.”
