It’s hard to imagine being away from your children or parents for months.
From being together every day to not seeing each other week after week, it’s an arrangement that requires a lot of sacrifice, patience, understanding, and love that never runs out.
This may not be the ideal setup, but individuals who commit to serving the country prove that things can always work out for everyone.
Samantha, an Army Specialist and mom of three documented the moment she reunited with her daughters after nine months apart.
Excited as she was, she feared her daughters wouldn’t want to see her after her deployment.
It wasn’t entirely new to her daughters since they had pretty much gotten used to Samantha being away for the weekend, a couple of weeks, or even an entire month.
But nine months was something else.
Samantha did everything she could to stay connected, video chatting with her girls daily.
She would even record herself reading to them.
In an interview with Military Kind, she said:
“They would give you this little chip, and then you could record yourself reading a book to your kids. And then they mail the book and the chip to your kids so they can watch you read it.
I did that so much! I think we got, like, twenty books total.”
While Samantha did her best to make up for the distance, there was still restlessness in her that caused her to feel like she wasn’t a mom.
She was sometimes clueless about what else to do to fill the void of separation.
Thankfully, she was surrounded by people who comforted her during those confusing times.
As she neared the end of her deployment, excitement began to build up.
The day finally came. Finally, Samantha could be with her daughters again after nine long months.
When the plane reached her country, she felt relief and joy wash over her. She was finally home.
Without disclosing anything about their mom’s homecoming, the girls’ dad took them to Fort Hood, where Samantha would be waiting.
It was priceless. The girls ran excitedly when they saw their mother walking towards them.
There were hugs all around and happy yells of “Mom!” Happy sobbing could be heard, too.
Samantha describes the moment as feeling like she was touching her daughters for the first time ever.
The tight hugs, the little arms around her neck, it was everything she had waited for.
In her own words, she felt like she had her heart back.
The moment was too overwhelming for her kids, especially her youngest.
Beyond the sobbing and the endless hugging was a queasy tummy from all the emotions.
If you listen closely, you can hear Samantha’s youngest daughter say, “Mom, I don’t feel good.”
The little girl ended up throwing up on her mom’s boot – a sure sign that Samantha was definitely still very much living the mom life.
