We all have fond memories of our grandparents. They are the ones who spoiled us when we were kids when our parents won’t. And as we grow older, they have become one of the best people in the world.
The sad thing is we barely see them when we start getting jobs. Yes, they guilt-trip us into not seeing them as often as they wanted us to. But we make up for it, right?
This grandmother found a way to encourage her grandkids to visit her often. The scheme can be mean to some. But for those who also have some family inside jokes, this turned out to be something hilarious.
How It Started
Mary Francis LaMorte seems like your typical grandmother. She lives in New Jersey and has ten grandchildren whom she loves dearly. They fondly call her Nanny.
Nanny Mary received this handmade gift from one of his grandsons, Christopher. It’s a board with numbers (for the ranking) and magnetic photos of all ten grandchildren. They brought it over, and Nanny Mary thought of something fun.
How It’s Going
It wasn’t until her grandson, New York City-based stand-up comedian Dan LaMorte, posted a video on TikTok on how her Nanny used that board. She used it to rank all ten grandkids!
Dan showed where he was at the current rankings, which was at #4. He challenged that ranking, saying that he might be demoted once Nanny saw his two new tattoos.
And he was right! The moment Nanny Mary saw the tattoos, he dropped to #10. What a savage grandma!
Some people thought that it was mean. Others didn’t believe it was true that she does rank her grandchildren. But when it went viral and reached almost 2 million views on TikTok, they finally had the chance to set the record straight. Yes, the rankings were serious!
Nanny’s Ranking Criteria
She started ranking her grandchildren from 1 to 10, and the competition was tight. Nanny’s ranking criteria are also pretty strict, so her grandkids have to win her affection or give her happy news.
In her live interview with WGN News, Nanny Mary said her grandchildren would get a 1Up in their ranking if they brought in the good news. Getting married and having children holds a lot of weight in Nanny’s heart.
But the one thing that kept one of her grandkids consistently at the top spot was visiting Nanny Mary (aaawww!). She gives credit to her grandchildren, who would drop by and spend time with her. The unfair thing, though, was that her #1 grandkid lived across from her!
Now, what would warrant a demotion? Tattoos are obviously a thumbs-down for Nanny. Her granddaughter Arianna has been at the bottom-most of the time. The reason? Not visiting or calling enough. That would definitely make Nanny sad.
“It’s a good system to keep the family encouraged to kind of stay close together, to always make sure you’re checking in,” Dan told Fox News about the best thing about Nanny’s ranking board.
