To age healthily and gracefully – that’s the goal.
We strive to live a healthy lifestyle while we are young, so we won’t worry much about sickness or early deterioration of our bodily functions as we age.
Isn’t it inspiring to see someone who may seem old yet is still very agile and mobile?
However, advanced age has more physical limitations.
Older people have more problems (or need to be more careful) when lifting and carrying heavy weights, and with speed.
It’s considered a fantastic feat if you get older and are still active. It’s a plus if you also still know how to have fun because… who says getting old should be boring?
Grandparents from Auburn, Washington, showed the world what getting older should be like.
The Emerald Downs Thoroughbred Racetrack in Auburn, South Seattle, celebrated Grandparents Week for the first time during the last weekend of June.
You might wonder how a racetrack would celebrate a weekend for their dear elderly.
Well… they celebrated in the best possible way.
They had a Grandparents’ Race!
These may be two words you won’t be seeing beside each other often (or ever!), but all I can say is this happened for real, and it’s something you wouldn’t want to miss.
Yes, it literally meant a race for grandparents in their racetracks.
The starting gates were filled with older people, not horses.
They were ready for this big race, and we bet they were filled with nervous excitement that time.
There were around 12 participants during the 40-yard race, and everyone was ready to go.
And, of course, it wouldn’t be a race without the commentator on air, right?
Check the video at the end of the article, and you’ll know what I’m talking about.
There’s a commentary about the race in true horse racing fashion!
The racers were ready, the starting gates were set, and off went the starting pistol!
Grandparents were in their most comfortable racing outfits and their legs at full speed.
It was a race all for good fun, and we bet all participants had a great time.
There was no registration fee; they only needed to show up before the gun start.
Aside from the race, they also had other games and prizes for all the grandparents who were there.
You might think it was a slow race, but it wasn’t. The winner ran 40 yards in less than 10 seconds!
It was inspiring to see individuals in their advanced age still running and having lots of fun.
Of course, others were only walking and jogging, but who cares!
They all get free ice cream at the end of the race, anyway.
Two participants tumbled while running, but there was no need to worry.
Organizers confirmed that no one was hurt or severely injured.
They got back up and finished the race, and I think that’s the right attitude. People had a good laugh at it – even the fallen racers themselves.
Watch the race below from two different angles; it will make your day!
