I can't believe these kids are in need of such basic items.

As the holidays are fast approaching and we think of all the holiday cheer that comes with it, let us not forget about those less fortunate than us.

‘Tis the season of giving, and there’s nothing wrong with spoiling your loved ones with gifts they’ll adore. But, if you can, see if you can donate to your local charity drive or gift donation program. Even the simplest, most practical gift can be exactly what someone wants and desperately needs.

You can see that message clearly in the heartbreaking gift requests below.

Things of My Very Own, Inc., a non-profit organization based in Schenectady, New York, runs a Christmas gift donation program.

According to their Facebook page, their mission is “providing crisis intervention services to children impacted by extensive abuse and/or neglect.”

They also strive to keep families together and children out of the foster care system if the reason is that the family can’t afford to buy the essential things a healthy child needs.

Below are some of the most heartstring-tugging gift requests from children asking for things that other children may take for granted.

For example, one 10-year-old boy asked for snacks so he could eat during snack time at school.

Snack time for children is a time for socializing, especially when there is snack trading involved. It breaks my heart to think of this poor boy who is not only in pain from being hungry, but also ostracized from his peers by not having something to eat with them.

But hey, he’s also 10 years old, and he has interests like any other 10-year-old. He’d like some Pokémon related items too. Imagine if he received Pokémon snacks? I’m sure it would make his day.

Things of My Very Own distributes these gift tags to local businesses in New York. From there, people choose which gift tags they would like to fulfill, and they deliver the wrapped present to the non-profit organization to hand out to the children.

Fortunately, many people commented under the Facebook post offering to buy the boy snacks and tons of Pokémon presents.

But this boy’s gift request isn’t the only one that stands out from the pile. There are many requesting practical items, with some of the gift requests being written for them by adults in the non-profit organization:

Here are three of the one hundred gift tags that will be arriving at Northway Toyota tomorrow afternoon!

In these three gift tags (out of 100), a 5-year-old would love something related to trains, but he really needs twin blankets; an 8-year-old boy is secretly Batman, but Batman needs a night light “to watch out for Scarecrow”; and a 12-year-old girl outgrew her pants thanks to puberty, and needs new ones that fit her properly.

This 6-year-old little boy wants food for “Cristmis”, and an army man.

And this 11-year-old girl wanted to remind gift-givers that she is a nice person, in case people felt she wasn’t deserving of warm blankets and a coat for the cold New York winter.

In a perfect world, we wouldn’t need to distinguish our wants and our needs. We would simply get our wants while having what we need.

But other people aren’t so lucky, and must choose between the two. It is especially heartbreaking when children must choose between what they want and what they need. They’re just kids being kids.

We can’t stop laughing!

However, the point of this article was not to have you feel distressed for these children. The good news is, many generous Facebook users are eager to help out these children in need. But there is always more we can do.

This holiday season, see if you can be the holiday cheer these children deserve.

If you’d like to donate to Things of My Very Own, Inc., you can donate on their website. Other organizations that also help children during the holiday season are Toys for Tots, Operation Christmas Child, and Make A Wish.

The smallest gesture, such as the price of a morning cup of coffee, could go a long way to help these children.

Please SHARE this with your friends and family to inspire the season of giving.
