Coronavirus has completely turned our everyday routines upside down.

But that’s left room for us to create new routines.

Ones that aren’t filled with overly busy work and stress. Instead, some of us have created joy-filled routines that are just plain old fun.

Jake, a 3-year-old boy from Franklin, MA, and Troy Thornton, an assistant Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA) train conductor, didn’t know each other before the coronavirus pandemic.

But they ended up becoming good friends and starting their very own joyful routine during the pandemic.

Jake absolutely loves trains. So, his mom would take him to the train platform so they could watch the commuter trains go by.

“I’m an assistant conductor. I ride the trains, collect fares, let people on and off the trains,” Thornton told Boston CBS Local.

Jake would get real excited when he would see the lights of Troy’s train coming through the tunnel and toward the platform.

Jake and Thornton eventually became accustomed to seeing each other.

Thornton started to make sure that he would stop and open the door so he could say to Jake.

“It comes through the tunnel and it honks and Troy opens the door and says ‘Hi Jake! See you tomorrow!’” explains Jake.

This ritual quickly became the best part of each of their day.

That little bit of love shared went a long way for the two of them.

“He makes my day more than you know,” Thornton said.

Thornton says that seeing Jake always gives him that extra little boost he needs to get through the rest of his workday.

“I knew Jake was going to be there to make my day and cheer me up and sustain me. You forgot all the troubles for that minute and it just carried you,” he said.

As for Jake, seeing Thornton every day makes him “happy.”

Unfortunately, Jake and Thornton’s new routine will have to come to an end.

That’s because Thornton is going to be transferred to the Worcester line. So, Jake wanted to make sure that the last time he saw Thornton was extra special.

Jake drew a special picture just for Thornton to say goodbye.

He also brought Thornton a Dunkin’ Donuts gift card that he purchased with money from his piggy bank.

Since Jake went out of his way to show how much he loves Thornton and values their friendship, Thornton figured he would return the favor.

He made sure that Jake got to ride on his train.

“When I sit down on the seat, I got to look out the window,” Jake explains.

Many people who heard about Jake and Thornton’s friendship applauded Thornton for taking time out to make a little boy feel special.

“Awwww how sweet is this! What a gentleman! I love [how] he took a few seconds to acknowledge him every day and make this little boys day every day and something to look forward to,” one YouTuber commented.
