This is so precious it made me tear up.

Most people love animals. For us animal lovers, we like to believe and imagine that we have some sort of connection with them. How often have you and I conversed with animals with the thought of, “hey, it’s responding”!

There are those, however, who actually do establish some sort of connection with certain species. Maybe Disney was on to something.

Here’s a dad who happened to be at the right place and time, able to capture his daughter on camera as she had an exchange with a baby deer.

What happened was this family, returning home from a canoeing trip, noticed a fawn in their backyard as they began unloading their stuff from the car. Little Maya. now called the “deer whisperer”, was standing on the driveway when the mammal approached Maya coming from the grass.

Most kids would run to their parents out of fear or curiosity, but little Maya maintained her composure. Calm like a pro, she crouches down and with her tiny hand, gestures silently to the fawn calling it over.

Perhaps sensing that the human was a young one too, the little deer walks up to Maya.

She remains calm allowing the fawn to walk up to her, also making sure the animal was comfortable before putting out her hand. Good thing Maya’s dad, Brad Herring, is a video maker and was able to record the amazing encounter.

There really is an unspoken connection between Maya and the fawn.

For some reason, the fawn finds comfort in Maya and warms up to her. It’s like these two innocent and loving hearts were in some way drawn to each other. Maya even got to pet the little fawn after a little while.

As beautiful and sweet as it all was, Maya knew that her new friend had to go back home to its mom. The doe must have been eating somewhere, recuperating from giving birth to the cute fawn. The fawn needed its mother and Brad knew it.

According to WildCare‘s website,

“In order to keep her young safe, a doe will leave her fawn in a secluded area, often for as long as twelve hours, distracting predators away from her baby while she forages for food.”

The fawn loves her new human friend and follows Maya as the little girl walks through the yard towards the woods. The baby deer by her side all the way as it follows Maya and her hand gestures. Maya is beyond ecstatic with the experience even flashing a smile towards the camera with obvious joy.

Brad even describes the encounter,

“The fawn had a good sense about Maya and followed her every step. They were inseparable from the moment the met.”

He goes on with an update saying,

“We saw two doe and two fawns in our neighbors yard yesterday and then again a fawn and doe in our backyard today so we are pretty certain that she was found.”

Once deep in to the woods, the fawn lays down on some leaves as Maya waves goodbye to her new friend. There are more feels to this as The Black Lillie’s song, “Yes, I Know” plays in the background.

It’s good to know that both parties are safe and happy. All thanks to the little “deer whisperer”.
