Having a baby is one of the most exciting yet highly anxious times for soon-to-be mothers. There’s that thought of carrying that little one and their tiny toes, baby smell, and all the cute baby stuff around.
But there could be a lot of worries and doubts. The main one is if a baby would come out healthy. Most moms would agree that sometimes, the question ‘what if something goes wrong?’ comes to mind more than a couple of times.
The worry could double for mothers who experienced miscarriage, especially since they knew from experience that something could go wrong. It takes a toll on their entire being. So, when they conceive again, the fear starts kicking in.
Losing a baby thrice
Cara and Blake Winhold were hoping for baby number two, something they had wanted for so long. However, it seemed like fate had other plans because it kept depriving them of it. Cara experienced three heartbreaking miscarriages.
She admitted that it took a toll on them. It wasn’t only about her body but their hearts and spirits, too. Cara started to think that maybe a second child wasn’t for them. Most people would believe in ‘third time’s the charm,’ and it seemed like they ran out of it.
The fourth try
It was in April 2021 when Cara went in for an ultrasound. She was five weeks pregnant and wanted to make sure of it. She told TODAY that she somehow felt “a sense of doom” no matter how she tried to be optimistic about it.
The sonographer told the couple they couldn’t detect a heartbeat. Cara didn’t feel a sense of panic since this was normal. They returned after two weeks, when they had the biggest surprise of their lives.
Not one, but two!
“Everyone in the room was in shock,” Cara said in an interview with TODAY as she recalled that very moment when they found out she was having twins.

The sonographer told her that they did not only detect a healthy heartbeat but also a second one! The couple was meant to have baby number two (and three!) after all.
Superfetation
According to maternal-fetal medicine specialist Dr. Lisa Thiel, what Cara experienced was called superfetation. This happens when a new egg is fertilized with a new sperm and is quite rare.

“The reason this is so rare is because hormones are released by the woman’s body to prevent further ovulation, and a thick mucus is created at the cervix to prevent any further sperm from entering the uterus at that time,” she told TODAY Parents.
Colson and Cayden
Cara and Blake welcomed their twin boys last October 25. Both came out healthy, though Colson was much bigger than his “younger” brother. The proud parents are just happy that they finally had their answered prayer.
The couple is enjoying parenting these two with their older son. What was once a family of three is now a party of five, and they love every minute of it.
