Some people see their dogs as their children, including Murfreesboro mom Jennie Tatum.
So, when Jennie saw that one of her dogs fell into her frozen pool she didn’t hesitate to risk her own safety to save the dog.
“He’s extra special, but I would’ve done it for anybody, any animal,” Jennie told News 4 Nashville. “They’re like our family.”
The heroic act of love was even caught on the family’s surveillance video.
The video shows Jennie’s two dogs playing near the frozen pool.
Her brown pitbull Sid was chasing his brother when he slipped and fell right into the pool which had frozen over since its pump was broken.
Thankfully Jennie saw what happened, ran out toward the pool, and jumped right on in.
“It was pure adrenaline. I was not even thinking about being cold,” Tatum told WTVF-TV.
Jennie broke through 2-inch ice as she waded across the pool to find her pup.
She crossed back and forth but couldn’t find Sid.
So, she got out of the pool and walked around it to see if she could spot him from above.
She jumped back in and grabbed the barely conscious 50-pound dog from the icy pool water. Sid had been submerged for at least one minute before being pulled to safety.
“I think he went into shock when he hit the water because he was basically floating when we found him.”
Jennie wrapped Sid up and immediately called her neighbor April Smith who is a veterinarian.
“I don’t think this dog had another minute based on his symptoms,” Smith told WTVF.
Smith had to administer an emergency shot to Sid.
“She said, ‘If we wouldn’t have given him that, I don’t think he would’ve made it,'” Jennie said. “His lips were blue, and his tongue was blue.”
After that, Sid was rushed to an animal hospital.
Thankfully, Sid was alright and fully recovered.
He just doesn’t go too close to the pool these days.
His story ended up going viral and the video of his rescue was seen on publications across the U.S.
More than 4.4 million watched the video on ABC7’s YouTube page.
People were impressed by Jennie’s heroism and were really glad that Sid was OK.
“That woman is a classic example of adrenaline helping us in an emergency,” one YouTuber wrote.
“That frozen water must have been unbelievably cold. Her feet must have been aching from it within seconds, but she kept on going, God bless her. I’m so glad the dog lived.”
“I cannot believe the dog survived after being under for so long. I’m crying. I’m so glad the woman saw what happened,” said another
“Bravo to this woman, she went through agony to save her dog. And her other dog was freaking out right along with her. ‘Save my buddy!” So glad to hear Sid is ok now, that was a close call,” ad another.
