What would be the first thing that you do when you wake up?

You would probably look at your phone. Today, it’s just normal for all of us. Even kids have their phones and social media.

So it would be a rare sight to see a teenager without social media.

When Sivert Klefsaas turned 12 years old, his mom, Lorna, gave him a challenge.

If Sivert could stay off creating and using social media until he turned 18 years old, then his mom promised to pay him $1,800.

According to Lorna, she called it the “18 for 18 challenge.”

Sivert, being a competitive child, wanted to win the challenge. Aside from that, he did not know how big or small the amount was.

“Being 12, I didn’t really have that great of a concept of money yet. So, I was like oh sick, yeah, absolutely,” Sivert laughs in his interview with KARE 11.

Lorna recalled that her son was excited to buy a car from the prize money.

“Oh, I had plans,” Sivert laughs as he remembers his goals.

Sivert agreed, and the deal was closed.

“He did really dig in. He was like ‘I’m not breaking this.’ I’m proud of him, because there were a few times where it was harder,” Lorna remembered.

Can you imagine that? For six long years, you are not allowed to have any social media account. Surely, Sivert’s classmates and friends have social media accounts, it would have been hard for a teenager.

“I knew for sure he was going to make it,” Sivert’s mom told confidently.

Lorna had reasons why she decided to create the 18 for 18 challenge.

According to Sivert’s mom, her older daughter struggled with social media when she was a teen. She was heartbroken when she saw how it affected her.

“She got so obsessed with keeping up her Snapchat streaks that really it was affecting her mood. It was affecting her friendships,” Lorna explains to KARE 11.

Lorna says her daughter can now handle her social media properly, and she is also in grad school and thriving.

As a mother, she didn’t want her youngest child, Sivert, to experience the same problems that her daughter had.

“You just hear about all the stuff that goes on and just with my friends and with school, and like, ‘oh somebody said this about you’ and ‘oh somebody did that.’ And I was really spared from all that,” Sivert explains.

After many years, it was time to cash in. Last month, Sivert celebrated his 18th birthday, and his mom was prepared to pay.

Lorna was so happy to give her son the money. He earned it, and for Lorna, it was one of the best money that she ever spent. Those six years were not easy, but Sivert made it.

As for the birthday boy, Sivert bought a new phone and created his first social media account!

“It’s hilarious. I feel like I’m like 80. I can’t seem to figure out social media. It’s pretty embarrassing. I’ll be with my friends, and they are like, ‘what are you doing?'” said Sivert.

Today, Sivert is slowly learning the trends of social media, and he’s doing so well too.
