Kids have a way of catching us off-guard – you never know just what they are going to do or say next.

One mom decided to “confess” something to her little boy, but she never expected a response like this! Thankfully, the blindsided mom caught the whole conversation on camera.

She uploaded the video on YouTube where it went insanely viral – and it’s not hard to see why!

The unassuming video begins with an adorable toddler in the frame while his mom, in a rather serious tone, begins to tell him a story. She’s building up to her “confession.”

“So, you know how I put you to bed last night…” she asks.

The little boy nods, with a worried look on his face.

The video was circulated on social media platforms and, so far, it’s been viewed more than 11 million times.

The clip features three-year-old Rutledge Grouse, and it was filmed by his mom, Jilliann, after Halloween 2019.

Of course, little Rutledge had no idea that he was actually participating in a video challenge instigated by ABC’s late-night TV host, Jimmy Kimmel.

Jimmy Kimmel’s challenge is called “I Told My Kids I Ate All Their Halloween Candy.”

Basically, parents tell their kids that they’ve eaten all their child’s Halloween candy and film their kids’ reactions, which are pretty hilarious when the screaming, foot-stomping, and tantrums ensue. Kimmel then picks the funniest clips and airs them on his show.

But nobody could have anticipated Rutledge’s reaction to the prank.

“So, remember I put you to bed last night?” Jilliann asks.

“Uh huh,” the three-year-old replies cautiously, listening intently to his mom. Then, she reveals that she “got really hungry” while he was in bed and ate all his Halloween candy!

Rutledge’s eyes widen with worry as he struggles to believe the terrible thing his mom has done.

He stares at her for a few seconds before replying.

But the worried expression is gone in an instant. He walks up to the camera and smiles, saying he knows that this must be a joke.

“You didn’t eat all my candy,” he says, grinning widely.

The poor little kid is either in denial, or he knows his mom would never do something so terrible… would she?

But Jilliann assures him that, yes, she did. She says that she was “so hungry” that she had to eat his candy. She tells him that she’s “really sorry.” Rutledge’s face falls and doubt starts to creep in.

His smile disappears and the seriousness of the situation begins to dawn on him.

Jilliann explains that she had no choice – she tells the little boy that there was no other food in the house and she just had to eat his candy.

But Rutledge isn’t buying her story. He hilariously marches over to the fridge, opens the door, and points at all the food inside.

“Well, you should have eaten something from in here!” he scolds.

But still, his mom keeps up the act. She pretends to be surprised that there’s food in the fridge and begins to apologize to her little boy again.

And that’s when we get to the most adorable moment in the entire video.

Rutledge closes the fridge and comes up to his mom. He looks straight into the camera. Jilliann certainly wasn’t expecting this response: “Mommy, I’m not mad at you. It’s okay.”

“I was seriously blown away by just how sweet he was about it! I knew he would be understanding but not to that extent. It made my mama heart so proud!” Jilliann told Fox 5 News. “Right after the video, I smothered him in kisses and we ate candy for breakfast!”

After the adorable video went viral, it got noticed by the Mayor of Greenwood.

And he was so moved by the little boy’s sweet response that he awarded Rutledge the key to the city and officially declared February 3 “Rutledge Chase Grouse Day”!

But that’s not all.

Rutledge was also given more candy as a reward for being so kind and understanding!

Rutledge’s parents, Jillian and Chase, wrote on Facebook, “Thank you to the City of Greenwood for recognizing our sweet boy and of course for his candy! He is so proud and so are we!”
