Women who always wanted to become mothers welcome pregnancy with excitement and joy.
The thought of bearing a child and for it to grow inside a mother’s womb for nine months has always been a great wonder. And after all that, they are brought out into the world, and you can finally carry them in your arms.
It’s always a mother’s pride and joy to finally see that little baby.
Those tiny fingers and toes, its coos, and cries; all seem so precious. That is why people often rejoice with any news of pregnancy.
But it was different for this mother in Bangladesh.
Then 20-yeard-old Arifa Sultana was from a low-income family in Bangladesh.
Still, when she and her husband found out she was pregnant, they accepted the news wholeheartedly, even if they knew it would be difficult for them to make ends meet.
Her husband earned less than $70 a month yet promised to give his family the best life he could.
Arifa gave birth on February 25, 2019, to a healthy baby boy.
They brought the baby home, tended to his every need like new parents would. They were taking it one day at a time but after 26 days, Arifa felt a sharp pain in her stomach.
Her husband brought her to the hospital only to find out she was in labor, again.
It turns out, Arifa had a double uterus, and she gave birth to twins.
Her doctor, Dr. Sheila Poddar, told the BBC that Arifa had no idea about her second uterus and had a set of twins in there. They were in total disbelief at what had just happened.
They confirmed it through an ultrasound scan, and the doctors had to carry out the babies through a C-section.
Yes, it is possible to have two uteruses, and it’s called Uterine Didelphys.
This is a rare condition wherein a woman has two uteruses, and it occurs while you’re still developing as a baby in your mother’s womb. This means that you are born with it.
This happens when your Mullerian ducts fail to connect correctly during the development stage.
There is no clear cause for this condition.
It is often linked to other conditions such as Herlyn-Werner-Wunderlich syndrome, Cervical agenesis, Congenital vesicovaginal fistula, Vaginal agenesis, and small kidneys.
Most, if not all, of these conditions, also happen while the baby is developing in the womb.
You can go through medical procedures to make sure if you have Uterine Didelphys.
You can undergo Hysterosalpingography, Sonohysterogram, Magnetic Resonance Imaging, and Ultrasound to check the possibilities of having this condition.
Your body may also show signs and symptoms such as heavy bleeding or extreme pain during your period, miscarriages, and even early labor.
Luckily for Arifa, she delivered all three babies healthy.
After that, their biggest challenge was working hard to give all three babies the care they needed. We all hope they’re getting as much support as possible.
