Pepperidge Farm Goldfish Crackers are a favorite among parents and kids alike. They are easily portable snacks that kids will actually eat.

And parents often love eating fistfuls too.

But the parents and kids of the world are being asked to halt their cheddar cheese indulgence. Pepperidge Farm is voluntarily recalling four varieties of their Goldfish Crackers after fears that they could be contaminated with Salmonella.

The flavors being recalled, in snack bags and large bulk boxes, are:

  • Flavor Blasted Xtra Cheddar
  • Flavor Blasted Sour Cream & Onion
  • Goldfish Baked with Whole Grain Xtra Cheddar
  • Goldfish Mix Xtra Cheddar + Pretzel

You can find a full list of recalled products and UPC codes here. Thankfully no illnesses have been reported after eating the fish-shaped crackers.

“Pepperidge Farm initiated an investigation and, out of an abundance of caution, is voluntarily recalling four varieties of Goldfish crackers,” the company said in a release, according to NJ.com.

CBS News reports that the company decided to recall their crackers after one of the ingredient suppliers told them that the whey powder used in some of their seasonings may have been contaminated with Salmonella.

An estimated 1.2 million cases of Salmonella illnesses occur each year that result in 23,000 hospitalizations and 450 deaths.

Food is the source of 1 million of these cases.

Those with Salmonella poisoning can develop diarrhea, fever, and abdominal cramps 12 to 72 hours after they are infected. The symptoms usually last between four to seven days, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Most people recover on their own.

Pepperidge Farm is asking customers who purchased potentially contaminated crackers to throw them away or return them to the store for a refund.

Three other companies also had also had to recall their products because of Salmonella fears. Ritz recalled 16 types of their crackers.

Swiss Rolls chocolate dessert rolls were also recalled because of potential whey powder contamination.

The CDC had to warn people not to eat Kellogg’s Honey Smacks Cereal after it was linked to an outbreak of Salmonella that sickened 100 people in 33 states.

“Do not eat this cereal,” the CDC sternly tweeted.
