A Michigan mother is giving some validation to the stories about moms having adrenaline-fueled superpowers in times of trouble.

Alyssa Dewitt didn’t exactly lift a car off of a child.

However, she, while pregnant, pulled three children who almost drowned in a lake out of choppy waters.

Dewitt, who was five months pregnant, brought her children to Lake Michigan for a beach day.

Their relaxing day took a frightening turn when she saw arms sticking out of the water waving for help.

All three children, who were under 15 years old, got caught in rip currents that were pulling them further out into the lake.

Dewitt made sure her own children were safe before running over to the edge of the pier while calling 911.

But the children’s heads were bobbing below the waves and they couldn’t hear what Dewitt was saying to them.

“The best I could do was just kind of scream into the phone that I needed help, there were kids drowning,” she told WPBN.

She then lay down on the First Street Beach Pier to see if she could reach them. But the kids struggled to stay afloat.

Every time she would grab one of their hands, a wave would come along and knock them apart.

“This part will stick with me forever. This girl looked at me and she said ‘I’m gonna die.’ It makes me cry every time I think about it,” she told WPBN. “I told her, ‘I promise you I am not gonna let you die out here; I am gonna get you out of this water.'”

That’s when Dewitt’s dormant mom powers awakened. She somehow gained the strength to pull each of the kids, one by one, up the wall of the pier.

She still doesn’t understand how she was physically able to do this.

Dewitt believes that she came to the beach that day as an act of fate and was meant to be there to save those children.

Thankfully, only minor injuries were sustained by Dewitt and the three children.

Dewitt went to the emergency room just to check on her pregnancy after lying on her stomach and all was well.

The local police have called her a “hero” for putting her own safety on the line to help complete strangers.

“She could’ve easily said ‘It’s too dangerous to go out there’ but she stayed and her tenacity absolutely saved those kids,” Manistee City Police Chief Josh Glass said.

Dewitt really wasn’t sure if those children would have survived if she didn’t intervene.

She said there were many tears shed and hugs given after the rescue.

Dewitt said she almost didn’t go to the beach that day because the wind was so heavy.

But she felt like she “needed” to go. Dewitt went on to warn others about water safety and how quickly this kind of thing could happen.

It’s always best to swim near a lifeguard and to never enter the water above your head unless you’re a trained lifeguard.

If you see someone in distress it’s best to try and reach out to them with a float, towel, or rope and wait for a professional to help instead of jumping into the water.
