When you see a pregnant woman on the street or at the shops, you might be tempted to comment on the size of her bump. Carrying too big, too small, too high, too low, it doesn’t really matter- people always have an opinion about it.
But is there really a right and wrong size a baby bump can have? No, there’s no such thing, and experts are highlighting this point.
There are various factors that can affect the size of a pregnant belly, doctors explain. One of them is how strong the woman’s abdominal muscles are. The stronger they are, the smaller her bump is likely to look.
At the same time, shorter women seem to be the ones whose bump will show earlier.
One of those shorter women is Brooke Luney, whose belly just looks giant.
“It’s extra noticeable because I’m 4-foot-11 and I have a short torso,” the young mother of six told TODAY. “Strangers will stop me in a store wanting to know if I’m expecting triplets.”
But she’s not. Luney is carrying her sixth child, and she’s really tired of hearing comments about how big her belly is.
As she explains, she has always carried “very big”. But the fact that she knows that her belly is big doesn’t make it much easier for her to explain to strangers that there’s nothing wrong with her pregnancy.
And it definitely is not an excuse for people to make “educated guesses”.
“Someone told me my belly is so big my baby is living in a loft and already has WiFi,” the 32-year-old wrote on Tik Tok.
And, although this sounds like a funny comment, there are so many others that just make her flip.
“Uhhhhh do you have 69 kids in there or is it 32 years old already?” someone asked her. “What is she pregnant with?” another one asked, to get the clearest response “A baby”.
Other strangers have dared to ask her if she has diabetes- which she doesn’t. It is true that women with untreated diabetes can carry too large babies, but given that the woman doesn’t miss any doctor’s appointment, such comments are quite hurtful for her to hear.
She has literally heard anything, including that she might have too much amniotic fluid, or that her baby is huge. Well, when she checked during week 35, the baby’s weight was 4lbs. That doesn’t sound like too much, right?
Luney recently posted a funny video on TikTok at 40 weeks and 2 days, lip-synching that her belly may or may not get even bigger- and she’s fine with that.
Over the last couple of days, she has been posting about how ready she is to meet the new baby, already past her due date, and still waiting.
This mom’s definitely got it and we just adore her attitude.
