Pregnancy isn’t easy for a lot of women. Apart from the nausea and vomiting that come with it, pregnant women also find it hard to move around with a growing belly. Some of them even experience lower back pain that keeps them from doing their usual activities at home.
Pregnancy didn’t stop a mother of three young kids from saving lives in Lake Michigan.
Five months pregnant, Alyssa DeWitt was set to go to First Street Beach in Manistee with her kids. They were supposed to take a relaxing swim that day.
The weather wasn’t nice so she thought of postponing the trip.
Something made her feel that they really need to be on that beach. And so the family went.
Her family settled on the right side of the beach.
It wasn’t their usual spot but she decided to take them there.
Then, Alyssa saw a pair of hands frantically waving from the water.
It didn’t take a long time for her to figure out what was happening. She knew right then and there that it was an emergency and she had to act fast.
Three kids were being pulled by the currents.
They were slowly getting deeper into the lake. And looking at how they were waving, she could tell that they were having a hard time getting back.
She ran to the pier’s edge.
There, she called 911. Unfortunately, it was too windy. The operators had trouble hearing her and she couldn’t hear them as well. She had to scream into her phone.
There was not enough time.
The girls were being pulled fast and they were literally drowning in front of her eyes. Seeing the situation, Alyssa decided not to wait for help to arrive. The girls won’t make it if she didn’t act fast.
She laid down over the pier’s side and told the kids to reach for her hand.
Unfortunately, it didn’t work. Each time they would get her hands, a wave would smash them back down.
She didn’t give up.
After a couple of tries, she succeeded in pulling every single kid out of the water. She had no idea how she was able to do that but she did.
Then, help arrived.
Alyssa was taken to the hospital to get evaluated. Fortunately, she and the baby are in great condition.
Alyssa shared the story in a Facebook post.
There, she shared:
“One of those girls looked at me with so much fear in her eyes and told me she was going to die.. I promised her I would not let that happen. I promised her with everything I had in me.”
A lot of people consider her a hero after what she’s done.
One Facebook user commented on her post:
“Good work thank you god definitely knew he had a soldier in you so yup he knew to place you there right when he did clearly those children are meant to still be with us and because of you they are you rock blessings headed your way ššš”
Another one said:
“Iām so glad you listened to that still small voice and leaned into courage and faith.”
