Stela Niznik owns the Chicken and the Egg restaurant in Miami, Florida. A few weeks ago, she was on her way to the restaurant after finishing her yoga class, when she noticed something odd.
Niznik was casually driving to work after a long yoga session, probably wondering how her day would go, or reflecting on her day’s schedule. But life had other plans for her that day.
“Usually we set an intention, and I told myself my intention was to do something good for someone today,” Niznik told WPLG Local 10.
And little did she know when she set that goal that her good intention would soon be put to use.
So, as she was driving, she noticed there was a car parked in the middle of the street. That was an odd sight, and she thought it would be a good idea to check in on the driver in case they needed help.
Indeed, the woman driving that car was in desperate need of help. She was literally about to give birth and there was nobody around to help her.
“The woman was pregnant and wearing a dress, and I could see blood all over her legs,” Niznik said.
Although this could have discouraged some, Niznik was not one of them. She knew that the woman she had in front of her needed help and she had somehow been sent to her for a reason. So, she didn’t waste any time and called 911.
And, while she probably expected the dispatcher to tell her she had to take the woman to the nearest hospital, she found out that she had to deliver the baby herself- there and then.
“So, I look, I’m like, ‘Well, I, I see the head. I see the baby’s head and the hair,’” Niznik recalled. “She said ‘OK, now I need you to take a deep breath, and I need you to stay calm. You need to deliver this baby right now.’ I’m on the phone, I’m like, ‘What?’ My first thought was, I didn’t even sanitize my hands!”
Niznik did her best to follow the operator’s instructions. She put a yoga mat down, helped the woman lie on it, and then tried to help the mother give birth.
“I’m pushing with one hand, and with the other hand I just started slapping her legs, yelling at her like crazy, I’m like, ‘Come on mom! You got this. Just keep on pushing, push!’” Niznik said. “And then eventually the baby just perfectly landed in my hands.”
Indeed the baby just landed in her hands, perfectly healthy and beautiful as only a newborn can be. The woman was in awe.
Later on, the woman and her baby were taken to the hospital, where they were both found to be in perfect health.
Niznik could still not believe what she had just achieved. She totally felt that she was sent there for a reason, and she now has a special connection with that mother and her newborn.
