Incredible things happen to a woman’s body when she conceives. Changes that are so fascinating that you’ll be left marveling at the science of it all and how truly resilient women can be. However, the transformation, no matter how amazing, does not always feel as good for the expectant mom. Along with the evident physical changes are other factors that prove just how challenging pregnancy can be: fluctuating hormones, nausea, fatigue, and food cravings and aversions.

It’s also a known fact that some women’s appetites double during pregnancy while some seem to lose interest in indulging — unless it’s the precise craving they have at the moment. Funny how specific (and unusual!) some pregnancy cravings can be! If you think some women just exaggerate, think again.

Here’s a compilation of 15 of the weirdest food combinations pregnant women asked for.

1. Buddy the Elf’s spaghetti

If you’ve seen the 2003 Christmas comedy film, you’ll know exactly what we’re talking about. If not, here’s a description that will give you a toothache: spaghetti with maple syrup, chocolate syrup, M&Ms, marshmallows, and a chocolate fudge Pop Tart. Pregnant women are advised to watch their sugar intake but indulging in this Elf-y treat once isn’t bad at all!

2. Ice cream and pickles

Now that’s a pretty odd combination. Sweet and cold ice cream with salty, sour pickles? No, thank you. But to the pregnant woman, it can be the next best thing to a feast. We can just picture the happy mom-to-be munching to her heart’s content.

3. Coal

Your jaw just dropped, didn’t it? Don’t worry, no one in their right mind would actually go as far as eating coal. Cravings can be weird, remember? This means even cravings for certain smells and textures. But yes, coal is a pretty weird craving to have.

4. Laundry detergent

Some women throw up the minute they get a whiff of laundry detergent, bleach, or fabric conditioner. Some, on the other hand, love the smell. While laundry detergent isn’t a horrible scent craving to have, it’s still a bit odd considering how strong it can be and how unusual it is to want to be sniffing it.

5. A dill pickle dipped in peanut butter

The combination of flavors is just overwhelming. It’s understandable to love both on its own but together? *shakes head* Hats off to pregnant women for their ability to stomach such food pairings!

6. Spaghetti topped with sugar

Buddy the Elf will love this one. This mom-to-be was so happy about this that she shared it on her Instagram page and captioned it, “Pasta and sugar yummmy!” She did acknowledge that it was a weird craving with a hashtag. Whatever makes you and your baby happy, mama.

7. Cereal with jalapenos

Yet another pairing that isn’t for the faint of… stomach. We love our cereal. And we love our jalapenos. But we don’t particularly love enjoying them combined. The person who shared the photo even bluntly captioned it, “My friend’s pregnancy cravings make me gag.”

8. Pasta, cheese, hot pepper sauce, and smoked sausage

Spicy pasta is always a welcome treat. So is pasta with lots of cheese, and even smoked sausage! But picture all ingredients in one bowl and suddenly, you’re not as hungry anymore. Rachel Jean Kinsella shared a photo of her pregnancy craving on Twitter and described it as “cravings getting interesting.”

9. An onion with a scoop of peanut butter

Not everyone likes onions, especially raw ones. But most people appreciate peanut butter: on bread, in dessert, on its own. Now, imagine how it would taste if you put raw onions and peanut butter together. It’s a no for us, too.

10. Chicken nuggets dipped in Oreo McFlurry

Weird but we’re not going to knock it until we’ve tried it. It’s probably not as bad as it sounds. Or maybe it’s just because we know both flavors so well and understand that some weird things might actually work.

11. Flamin’ Hot Cheetos, and cream cheese on a bagel

A breakfast staple with spicy junk food? It just might work. Sounds pretty odd at first but cream cheese has a way of tasting delicious with just about anything, doesn’t it? Or does that sound like something a pregnant woman with ridiculous cravings might say?

12. Burnt toast with peanut butter

When we say burnt, we really mean blackened toast. Everyone has burnt bread once in their life and the taste is far from pleasant. So we’re really wondering why a mama-to-be suddenly craved for really burnt toast with a layer of peanut butter on it.

13. A burger, dill pickle, and raw onions on a chocolate waffle

The first three aren’t so bad, really. It’s just difficult to imagine how these flavors will taste when paired with a chocolate waffle. But what baby wants, baby gets, right?

14. A salad without lettuce

Take away the essence of the typical salad and you’ve got yourself an unusual craving. We’re seeing lots of cheese though, so that’s really not so bad. Vegetables with cheese are always good together.

15. Nutella and Twizzlers

Weird to some, but a welcome snack to most. This will be a hit with the kids, too. This mom’s pregnancy craving will have the rest of us wanting some for ourselves, too.

As yucky as some pregnancy cravings sound, you should know how happy this makes mamas-to-be. We can discuss how weird it is but we all know at the end of the day, we know we’ll gladly help the mamas we know to get the exact cravings just to make her and the little one growing inside her happy.
