High school kids in a New Jersey school took to social media to show their disgust at the food being served in the cafeteria.

A chicken cheese steak sandwich that looks suspiciously like a rubber part from a car was posted, and it does not look appetizing. Not exactly something you’d point at and order.

Moldy hamburgers, frozen sandwiches and expired milk made the rounds online as students expressed their frustrations in a new phenomenon called “lunch shaming” that even parents took notice.

The school’s food is provided by Chartwells12K.

Milk being poured out of a box made a slow, gloppy descend almost like used engine oil being drained from an old car. The burger bun needed effort to be poked and lifted.

Yummy.

Kids are taught to be thankful with the food served on any table but this time, even standards were put into question. Any parent would be upset seeing their kids fed what looks to be… junk.

“Look at this! This is the main meal. It looks like puke in apple sauce. Nasty!” says one student behind the camera.

Surprisingly, this is not the first time Chartwells12K has had issues with its food. Back in 2014, students at a Connecticut high school actually boycotted school lunches that were provided by Chartwells12K for the same issues.

Staff shortages and budget cuts forced this New Jersey school to source their food externally.

Kids, growing kids, need healthy, nutritious food. Moms and dads have enough to worry about and paying for the school’s fees, they expect their kids to be well cared for. And that includes cafeteria food.

Chartwells12K released a statement saying,

“We recognize there have been a few instances where we didn’t meet the expectations of all of our students and families and have carefully investigated each situation. There’s nothing we take more seriously than the health and safety of our students.”

A petition that has 1,100 signatures and counting was started by parents and students.

The Woodbridge School Board decided that a change was in order and will now have Pomptonian Food Services take care of their students’ meals after Thanksgiving break.

Board president Marie Anderson wasn’t happy. she spoke to the Chartwells representative, telling them the food given to Woodbridge school kids is “disgusting.”

“When I heard the stories and I saw the photographs of the food served, I was upset, disappointed and shocked to see such deplorable and disgusting food options for our students,” she said, her voice rising with emotion. “Lack of nutritional food in our schools is a public health crisis. It is unacceptable. And whoever violates this will be held accountable.”

“It’s unfortunate you missed the mark. Your service was below standards. There is no room for error,” she continued.

Health issues have been reported with a few students calling in sick, while others came home starving as the portions served just weren’t enough. Parents have had enough and the school took action.

Chartwells have since taken responsibility over the revolting reports. In the end, the students were heard. Let’s hope their new food provider rises to meet what growing kids need.
