Military families know how difficult it can get. Deployments can last anywhere from weeks to months and that’s a long time to be away from your family. It’s especially true when it comes to toddlers and other young children. But they say absence makes the heart grow fonder and that might explain why this video of a child reuniting with family is so heartmeltingly sweet.
Little Mason was hungry and didn’t know what his mom was planning
When the video opens, Little Mason is just standing and looking at his mom. He’s feeling a little hungry and is trying to explain that to his mom. But his mom is telling Mason about a special surprise coming today.
Apparently, someone important is coming home and is almost there. She even tells him:
“You have a visitor, Mason.”
But Mason is so confused. This young baby can’t imagine who could be at the door. He knows that his mother wouldn’t be saying this unless it was really important, but what could the big surprise be?
The door opens and a figure appears and it blows Mason’s mind
Then Mason hears the door opening and turns his head towards it. You can see the light pour in from the outdoors until a figure in military fatigues steps through the door. While Mason’s mother asks “Who is it, Mason?” you can see Mason’s little head look up. When she spots her father’s face, Mason explodes into a ball of action and races for the door.
Mason reaches his father’s side and the soldier falls to a knee. His smile is bright and wide as he holds his son for the first time in about a month. It may not seem like a long time, but that’s a full month with this family not being in direct contact. It can be hard for a father as it is for a young son.
Young Mason takes only a few seconds to welcome his father in a cute and special way
After a few moments, Mason reaches up and takes his father’s military hat. He puts the hat on his head as if to say “You can relax, dad”. But it’s also a sweet way to show his father that he supports him and feels close and connected with his military parent.
What’s cute about this scene is how Mason has completely forgotten his hunger. He also forgets to answer his mother’s question about who his special visitor is. All Mason wants to do is to reconnect with his father and show him the special world that his mother has helped raise him in. So Mason rushes over to a table to get something that’s important to him.
Father and son share a bonding moment with Sesame Street
Little Mason rushes over to a table and gets one of his favorite books off the table. After smiling at his mother, Mason then waddles over to his dad to show the book to him. He opens to a random page and talks. You can hear Mason’s babbling and burblings as he points to Elmo and the other characters in the book.
But then, Mason’s father does something incredibly sweet.
He reads the book with Mason, talking about the characters and enjoying the children’s literature along with his son. It’s a truly special moment that jis a cherry on this very adorable cake.
Life for a military parent isn’t always easy, but the homecomings are always worth it
Any military veteran will tell you that deployment can be challenging. Being away from your family, even during peace times, can be trying especially for families with younger children. But our soldier relatives are always happy to come home, just like the dad in this video.
