No matter how well you take care of yourself during pregnancy, nature has a way of surprising us when it’s time to give birth. There are delightful ones such as the gender being different from what was originally declared after an ultrasound, or finding out you’ve been carrying twins this whole time.

Then there are worrisome circumstances such as health issues.

What most people fail to realize is how impactful these situations are to the parents.

See, the whole world is always quick to see the negative side of things, especially those who don’t have kids and only have a vague idea of what parenthood is really like. But the parents? They’re tough.

They will do what it takes to protect their little ones. More than simply meeting their babies’ needs, parents go above and beyond, searching for ways to make life easier so that their children don’t have to suffer.

This is what Everly’s parents are like.

Everly was born with congenital cataracts in both eyes. This means both the lenses of her eyes were clouded. A baby with congenital cataracts will find it difficult to see well. This means the brain and eyes will also have to work extra hard to work together in order to develop normal sight and proper control over eye movements.

Little Everly had to undergo four surgeries and have special eyeglasses made so she could see well.

Obediently standing still as her father positioned the eyeglasses carefully in place, Everly blinked a few times and took in all the sights that were suddenly clear to her.

Then, very slowly, she broke into a smile and began looking around curiously.

She stroked her dad’s face gently as she gave him the sweetest smile, then turned her attention to the moving images on the television. Then, she glanced down at the floor where her toys were and spotted the eyewear case.

Her curiosity and amazement were just too precious for words.

She would look up at her parents from time to time, smiling. We can just imagine all the emotions that filled the room in that moment!

In a comment under the YouTube video, Everly’s mom Melissa wrote,

“Hello! I’m Everly’s mom Melissa! What a long journey it’s been. She was diagnosed with congenital cataracts by her pediatrician at 3 months and we were sent to U of M. She had her 1st surgery to remove her cataracts and replace them with IOL lenses at 11 months. She was 1 when she got her 1st pair of glasses.”

She continued:

“She is six now and doing wonderful! She has had 5 total surgeries, patching, 2 pairs glasses, eye drops and all that fun stuff but she is a fighter! She was wearing her Batgirl outfit because it was my birthday and I love Batman. Needless to say it was the best birthday ever!!! Thanks so much for sending your love and kind words. Her dad and I are so proud of her. 🥰🥰”
