When Melissa Surgecoff began to experience unbearable cramps in her stomach, she thought that she was passing a kidney stone.
So imagine her surprise when she sat on the toilet and a baby came out!
The 38-year-old, from Peabody, Massachusetts, said that looking back, the pregnancy signs were obvious- but at the time she’d dismissed them, and thought perhaps she was trying to pass a kidney stone.
On the morning of March 8th, Melissa woke to what she first thought was menstrual pains.
As the day went on, her cramps became faster and more intense, so Melissa asked her fiancé, 37-year-old Donnie Campbell, to call 911 and report she was passing a kidney stone.
“The only relief I would get was sitting on the toilet,” she told Today. “So I was in the bathroom, and I … couldn’t sit still. I was screaming, I was trying not to be loud like I didn’t know what this was.”
While she was on the toilet, Melissa recalled feeling ‘something rush out of her,’ but even then, she never thought that it could be a baby.
“I look in the toilet and I still didn’t know what it was,” she said. “And I thought I basically lost an organ because I didn’t know!”
Hearing the commotion, Donnie came and took a look in the toilet for himself.
It was then that the couple realized that they had just had a baby.
“I’m screaming, I’m freaking out, I’m in shock,” Melissa recalled. “I don’t know what’s going on, and Donnie went to the toilet, and he rescued the baby.”
The baby was a little boy, and the couple decided to name him Liam.
Thanks to some TV shows he’d watched, Donnie knew how to clean the baby. His fatherly instincts immediately kicked in, and he became fascinated with watching Liam breathe.
“I kept watching his stomach and he kept breathing on his own and then it became more of a celebration,” he said. “I stood up and held him close to my heart against my body to keep him warm.”
When EMS arrived at the couple’s home, they were still expecting Melissa to be passing a kidney stone.
The baby was just as much of a surprise for them as it was for Melissa and Donnie!
Thankfully, a short trip to the hospital confirmed that both mom and baby were doing good, apart from a slight iron deficiency in Liam.
Melissa’s pregnancy symptoms included irregular periods- which she says she’s always had, and weight gain- which she put down to being on some new medication for multiple sclerosis.
“So if you look back on it now, yeah, there are clear-cut signs,” she said. “Like my feet were swollen. … My shoulders and upper body were swollen and just like, you know, gaining weight.”
A happy surprise.
When the couple broke the happy news to their family, they were shocked but overjoyed, and showered the couple with all the baby essentials.
“Normal moms have nine months to plan to do whatever, to save and get gifts and buy stuff,” Melissa said. “Once they found out, they went into super overdrive.”
Melissa and Donnie planned to get married in September 2020, but after the pandemic postponed their wedding, they’re hoping that their new date will go ahead in June this year.
As a bonus, little baby Liam can now attend the wedding!
