They say that having lots of kids is fun, but what if you have 44 children?
It may seem impossible, especially when the mother is just 41 years of age, but somewhere in Uganda, this is a real story.
Mariam Nabatanzi, commonly known as Mama Uganda had a hard start in life.
When she was just three days old, her mother abandoned her and her siblings.
Her father got married again, but like in fairy tales, her stepmother caused her more pain than she could imagine.
When Mama Uganda’s father was outside, her stepmother would mix crushed glass in their food, t her taking her siblings lives.
At the tender age of 12, her own father sold her to an older man for marriage.
She became the fifth wife of an older man and bore him their first set of triplets at 13 years old.
Soon, she conceived again and gave birth to twins, then again to quadruplets.
At 18, Mama Uganda already had 18 children.
She sadly lost six of her children.
Two of her kids passed in her sister’s home.
Mama Uganda said that her sister invited them to live in her home.
One morning, Mama Uganda got the chance to speak to them on the phone.
Then, out of nowhere, her half-sister called her saying her kids had passed.
Because of poverty, justice wasn’t served.
The third child who passed away had heart problems, while the fourth one passed of malaria in their home.
This did not include the other two she lost, which she discusses in an interview with Ruhi Cenet.
Mama Uganda gave birth 15 times.
She had twins four times, triplets five times, and quadruplets five times.
Her last child was the only singleton pregnancy.
Mama Uganda, when asked about her marriage, said that there was no love in their union.
She said there was a lot of domestic violence, and he had five wives.
One time, she remembers running away and going back to her father, only to be returned.
Because of her kids, she tried to stay, but her last straw happened when one of her stepmothers, the one who took her as her daughter, had an affair with Mama Uganda’s husband.
Her stepmother even gave birth to her husband’s children.
Aside from this, her husband would even bring women to their home and asked Mama Uganda to prepare food for them.
It was so painful for Mama Uganda.
All her life was filled with betrayal.
She was betrayed by the woman who gave birth to her, her father, her stepmothers, and even her husband.
She ran away, and she went to her grandmother.
Being the breadwinner and having 38 kids wasn’t easy.
There were so many chances that she could leave them, but she couldn’t.
She couldn’t bear leaving her kids, the same way her mother had done to her.
She took care of her kids by working every job available.
The now-41-year-old super mom would take whatever odd jobs that she could find to provide for her children.
Life is hard, but she will do everything for her happiness – her children.
She always explains to them the importance of studying so that they can get good jobs and have enough money for a good life.
She sells herbal medicine, sells scrap metal, sells alcoholic beverages, works as a hairdresser, and even helps decorate local events.
That is how hardworking Mama Uganda is.
But what happened to her? How is it possible for Mama Uganda to birth multiples each time?
Mama Uganda has a rare genetic predisposition to hyper-ovulate.
This means she releases multiple eggs at a time and that’s how she conceived all her beloved kids.
