Parents would never want their kids skipping school. We encourage them to stay and learn, even sign up for a club, and meet new friends. While it is not the only way to success, getting an education always has its edge in the job market.
So, when parents hear that their child skipped school, they’d think something is bothering them in school, and it might require a long talk when the kid gets home. For grade-schoolers, maybe they just miss mom and dad.
Missing her family
It was a minor reason, but this is what Macie Semrau felt the morning of April 12th. She said she wasn’t feeling like going to school that day and would prefer to stay at home because she missed her dad.
Her parents made this an exemption since Macie never wanted to skip school. But they saw that she was not really in her best self because she hesitated to get up and dress. They decided to let her stay in for the day.
Staying in for the day
They didn’t know then that Macie’s rare bailing out of school would be a life-saving decision.
Macie’s father, Kyle Semrau, came home that morning from his overnight shift and said he felt light-headed. He told his wife that he’d take it slow that day and would stay in with their kids. The day went on like usual until Kyle found himself in a medical emergency he never thought he’d survive.
Saving daddy
Kyle was in the basement when he collapsed and found himself in and out of consciousness. When it happened, he was with their four-year-old son, and all he could do was scream for help.
Luckily, Macie was there, and she went down to help her father. She was surprisingly calm when it happened and knew exactly what to do. She followed her father’s instructions, got his phone, and opened the basement.
Kyle said he just blurted out his phone’s passcode in one of the moments he was conscious. Once the phone was unlocked, Macie opened the browser and did something amazing that helped save her daddy.
Tech-savvy kid saved the day.
Macie showed Boston 25 News how she was able to call for help. She tapped the new browser button and typed ‘Eliot.poliz,’ and the Google search result showed Eliot Police Department’s webpage. She immediately pressed the call button.
She told the police her father needed medical attention and gave them their address. The police arrived two minutes later with the medical team and rushed her father to the hospital. Macie admitted that she thought her father was going to die.
Divine intervention
It took a few days for Macie to find the courage to return to school and leave her dad. She felt he needed her and didn’t want to leave his side. After all, it was on that rare occasion that she skipped school that saved her father’s life.
But here’s the biggest coincidence: that day of the emergency was her great-grandmother’s first death anniversary. In hindsight, the family thought that it probably was divine intervention.
