For new parents, there’s nothing more enjoyable than surprising friends and family with a pregnancy announcement. And from a family member’s perspective, learning that your daughter, sister or cousin is going to have a baby is incredibly exciting.
So imagine what would happen if a family member of yours had told you that they were due to give birth to one baby – only to surprise you with two. That’s exactly what happened to Grandma Martha, mom of Tom, whose wife, Briane, was actually pregnant with twins.
Martha thought that her daughter-in-law was only having a baby girl, and on her birthday, Tom and Briane visited her home with their new daughter. But then, in a video captured by Briane, Tom presented Martha with the ultimate surprise: a baby boy.
In the video, Martha can be seen staring at the baby in dumbfounded shock. She gasps, “That’s a real baby!” and Tom grins and explains that she has a grandson too.
By this point, the babies were nearly a month old, but Grandma Martha hadn’t been able to visit them at the hospital, where Briane had given birth to them prematurely, because of COVID restrictions. Somehow, the pair managed to hide any news of their double birth until Martha’s birthday, where they made the big reveal.
And judging by the video, Martha is certainly surprised. Still gaping at the baby in Tom’s arms, she asks incredulously:
“Does anybody know this?”
But Tom says no, and Briane lets her know that she’s the first. As it transpires, Tom and Briane had hidden the news that they’d be giving birth to twins from everyone.
Named Brinkley Hope and Ace Leo, the little twins made the most fantastic birthday present for Grandma Martha. In an interview with Inside Edition, she said:
“We knew all about baby Brinkley, but it had been my birthday, and when Tom came walking down the hall, he said, ‘I did not have time to wrap your birthday gift.’ And when I looked up and saw the baby, I really thought it was one of those baby alive dolls.”
We’re sure Martha preferred the truth – that the pair had a very real secret son that they had been waiting to surprise the grandma with.
When asked why they had decided to keep the baby a secret from the rest of their family, Tom said:
“I always said if we were blessed and lucky enough to actually have twins, that I would love to keep one of them a secret.”
Luckily, Martha wasn’t offended to have been kept out of the loop, and she looks as if she’s loving her new grandma duties to not one, but two children!
Now that the video has been shared to YouTube, people around the world can’t get enough of Martha’s sweet reaction. It was only posted on July 29, but already has more than 500 thousand reviews and 16 thousand likes.
Many people shared their amusement that Martha seemed so excited, while her unnamed husband seemed unbothered by the announcement. One person commented:
“The grandfather didn’t really care he was like oh it’s just another child who cares”
Most people who commented just couldn’t get over the sweetness of the reveal, with one person writing:
“They’re so cute!😆❤❤😆 and she was surprised it’s twins.😂💜💜💜💜💜👍👍👍👍”
