The journey to parenthood is never all that clear-cut. Couples always have different opinions on how many kids they want, if they want boys or girls, and all sorts of other “plans” that they go into the journey with! For one recent couple, their plans for a little girl were turned on their head when they went to get an ultrasound and heard five heartbeats coming through the speakers.
Megan and Joshua Hulen are the parents of two boys that wanted to add a little girl to their family.
Having a house of all boys is cool, but understandably, Mama Megan wanted a girl! The couple began trying for another baby, hoping it was a girl. Although Megan and Joshua already had two boys, fertility wasn’t always easy for them.
Megan has PCOS and the journey to pregnancy wasn’t easy for any of her kids.
The first thing that the couple did was go on special medication to help Megan get pregnant. Soon, they were blessed to welcome Jacob into their lives! A few years later, however, the couple knew they wanted another. Using IUI treatment and stem injections, little Matthew was born. Still, Joshua wanted a little girl, but Megan was reticent to try again. They had previously had some complications with Matthew and she was nervous about moving forward with a third pregnancy.
Finally, they both got on the same page about it and decided to try for one more, hoping it was going to be a girl.
After some “trying”, one day, it happened. The test came back positive and they went ahead and scheduled an ultrasound to see how their new baby was doing! What happened next, however, was something they were never expecting.
When the technician placed the device on her stomach, the results were shocking.
There wasn’t a heartbeat… there were five! Megan was pregnant with a rare set of Quintuplets! As she explained:
“We decided to try again for a baby girl and when we went for the ultrasound we were told there were five heartbeats instead of one. I might have cried for at least an hour!”
For the 5 foot 1 woman, her only thought was “where are all of these babies going to go?!”
A few months later and the Hulen family went from four to nine, overnight.
As you can imagine, things were HECTIC for the first few months! The order of kids from oldest to youngest went: Jacob (9), Matthew (3), Allison (1), Adam (1), Madison (1), Emma (1), and Chloe (1). Nowadays, life is pretty different than before her family more than doubled overnight!
Each day consists of lots of prep, planning, and routine, but Megan wouldn’t trade it for the world.
Any parents know the struggle of having little ones, but going through 16 cans of baby food a day is unreal! Still, they are chugging along and the large family of littles is slowly getting older. Now that Jacob is older he is started to help with the family needs, too! Are things a bit crazy? Of course. Thankfully, “crazy” and “love” aren’t all that different from one another!
