The Big Brothers Big Sisters of America is a program that has helped numerous young boys and girls overcome any difficulties and discover their real potential.
The program aims at empowering the youth by helping them build significant one-to-one relationships that will ignite their “power and promise”, as they state on their website.
And, although many of the mentors limit to simply providing basic guidance to their assigned mentee, like advising them not to quit school or giving them tips about selecting a college, there are those mentors who take their role more seriously.
Like Kacy Andrews, at the time in her early 20s, who was new to Los Angeles and had plenty of time to spend for a good cause.
Andrews decided to become a mentor with the program and she was assigned young Inez Esparza.
The girl looked up to her, and Andrews immediately felt that there was a special connection between the two of them.
“I’m the type of person that when I commit, I kind of commit 110%,” Andrews said during the Tamron Hall Show.
Kacy and Inez spent much time together, and they shared their best and worst times, which definitely bonded them even more.
“I’ve seen her through some difficult times,” Andrews said of Esparza, “and she’s seen me through some difficult times.”
Like, when Kacy was trying to conceive a baby after she got married later in life. It was hard for her to go through that process, both physically and emotionally, but Inez was there the whole time, supporting and lifting her up in her darkest times.
Today, thirty years later, the women are still in each other’s lives and they’re closer than ever. Besides the countless memories they have built together over the years, they have something else that will unite them forever.
Six years ago, Inez offered to help her once mentor and now best friend- almost sister- have a baby by becoming her surrogate.
“I think I kind of just said it,” Esparza said, “and it felt natural, it felt like ‘this is what it’s supposed to be’. This is the plan, we got this, we’re gonna do this, and she’s gonna be a mom one way or another.”
Indeed, only some months later, Inez gave birth to not one, but two babies.
Andrews was as happy as one can be, she was in seventh heaven when her twins were born! To this day, she still can’t believe that her friend did this for her family.
Today the boys are six years old, and they appeared in the Netflix “Fuller House” series.
The two women are both amazed at how smart and talented the twins are, but, as Inez puts it, they came to this world in a special way so they had to be special themselves.
This heartwarming story is a reminder that strong relationships are the most important thing in our lives.
