Every milestone a baby makes is celebrated by a mother.
Their first smile, the first time they can hold the bottle on their own, when they can crawl, talk, and walk.
Every single experience is equally monumental and amazing. But before our babies are able to do these things, we talk to them. Research says that babies can start understanding words as young as six months.
A study by the University of Pennsylvania revealed that infants between six and nine months are able to grasp the meaning of common words several months before they are able to speak them, according to Fox News.
Prior to this, it was believed that babies could only understand the elements of the sounds of words but not their actual meanings.
“There had been a few demonstrations of understanding before, involving words like mommy and daddy,” Dr. Daniel Swingley, the lead researcher on the study, said.
“Our study is different in looking at more generic words, words that refer to categories. I think this study presents a great message to parents: You can talk to your babies, and they’re going to understand a bit of what you’re saying. They’re not going to give us back witty repartee, but they understand some of it. And the more they know, the more they can build on what they know.”
Well, one baby on the internet did. And she’s a lot younger than six months.
This baby is just 8-weeks-old.
The video begins with her mommy who is off camera cooing loving things to her baby.
“You’re so cute,” she says to her baby.
“Really?” mom asks.
“Did you have a good Christmas? Did you? Did you get everything you wanted? Was Santa good to you? Yeah? I’m glad you had a good time. You’re such a happy baby.”
“Mommy loves you. Momma loves you. I love you,” she says to her baby.
Then mom gets a response she wasn’t expecting at all. Her baby coos back to her and it sounds as if the baby is saying “I love you” to her mom.
“Aww did you say I love you?” mom asks her baby laughing. “I love you sweetheart.”
We’re not sure if this baby actually said “I love you” but it sure does sound like it.
It sounds like this baby is trying to mimic what her mother said to her. After the video was posted online people couldn’t help but express their feelings on what they heard the baby say.
One YouTuber said. “Awww – bless – what a precious darling little poppet. That smile would melt the stoniest of hearts. And did sound like she was trying to imitate Mum’s words as best she could.” Then another fellow mom commented, “I have three grown sons who leave whiskers in the sink when they shave. This video made me miss the baby stage. I know you’re sleep-deprived, folks, but cherish this time!”
So, researchers might have to continue their baby research after this video. You can watch it below and decide what the baby says for yourself.
